The main terminal is a big long (very long) straight line See here http://goo.gl/maps/vCSyA it is very very pretty it has to be said.

(i just measured that terminal it is over 1 mile long 1,770 meters!)

It felt to Charles and I more like a space station in a film than anywhere on Earth - we arrived late at night and took off before dawn yet it was full of wide awake people from all over, wearing everything from burquas to shorts and T shirts, all busy shopping!

I had no reason to purchase anything the first time I went there and the second time I had seriously damaged my right foot 12 hours before the flight, I had torn something and could barely walk, but I hopped my way through the airport as best I could :) only been there twice.

The flying saucers do make it a bit surreal :)

and the rest of the general design does feel exceptionally modern

Hi again guys, hope you're all enjoying your weekend!

I think that it will more than likely be Emirates that I fly with as they are having special fares at the moment so I'd be a fool not to take advantage of them while they are on, if anyone is planning on going to the Philippines before I think it's the end of July I would recommend taking a look at the fares available. Dubai is looking more and more amazing, I'm a little worried about getting distracted and missing my connection as the stop over I'm looking at is just over 3 hours, will have to have a cattle prob to keep me focused I think!

Just need a quick double check on something, obviously I won't be taking drugs however I will be taking my prescribed medication with a copy of the actual prescription, I'm presuming those items together won't cause any problems? It's in tablet form so I can't see why it would cause any issue but it's best to be prepared!

    Regards,

Hi guys, it looks as though it will be Dubai I'm transfering at, let's hope those UFO's are just for show and not containing the little green men that will abduct me and make me miss my flight.... that's my excuse if I get lost anyway. Emirates are really good on price recently, if anyone is planning on travelling to the Philippines before the end of July I'd recommend checking them out, looks like they have some special offer fares to Manila!

Just a quick check, I won't be taking any bad tablets, don't fancy being flogged or the death penalty however I will be taking my prescribed medication which I presume aslong as I have a copy of my prescription that should eliminate any problems? Or would I need a doctors note to say I require them? Please just a copy of the prescription, getting anything out of my doctor is akin to getting blood out of a stone!

Hope you guys are having a great weekend!

Given that you are in transit the prescription should be fine. If breaking your journey in Dubai for a day or two a doctor's letter might be a wise precaution.

Anyway, you need to think carefully about:

"pail and dipper" showers in cold water

Fried fish and rice for breakfast

Having a good answer to the question, "What is your religion?" from people you have just met...

    etc!

For the purposes of Philippine Customs, your GP needs to provide you with a Prescription - in the normal form for dispensing in the UK - but all the medications listed should also have their generic drug name included in parentheses. For example, if your GP prescribes "Voltarol" (an advanced non-steroidal anti-inflammatory), then this should be written as "Voltarol (Diclofenac Sodium)" followed by the dosage and frequency. He should also provide you with a letter in which he provides details of the condition being treated the prescribed drugs (with both their UK pharmaceutical and generic names). These requirements are not unusual for travellers.

You will need to bring an adequate supply of all prescribed medication since generic equivalents may not be available or have a different potency.

    Good evening,

I felt I should pass on my thanks to you guys for all the help, I'm happy to say everything is now booked and the advice you guys have given has made it a whole lot easier but not less painful, the nurse took great delight in stabbing me three times in three different places for my jabs but at least it's all done! So a heartfelt thank you to everyone!

However, I do have a bit of a long stop over in Dubai, well, 11 hours... it was the cheapest fare and as such, I dont qualify for the expenses paid by Emirates hotel and food things so I was wondering, without leaving the airport (that may happen next time) if you guys have any recommendations to pass the time while I'm there, other than sleep :)

    Again, thank you very much!

Hi Gav,...your a young lad,..going to the Phils is going to be a doddle for you! I was 45 when I first went out, guess I was as concerned about everything you mentioned ( I'd only ever been to Spain/ tenerife before).
Trust me,..you will wonder what all the fuss is about once you get past the first meeting at the airport. Visit the airport toilet,..splash some water, brush the teeth, maybe change into a fresh t-shirt, a wee splash of deo, calm the nerves. The meeting is a mix of surprise and fear,...is she really as good looking in the flesh?...will she arrive at all ?,...how many of her family will be there too, mainly for the free ride and food ?
Beware of the touts outside wanting to help,..a carry of your bags from the pavement to the boot of the car will be expected to be rewarded with a tip,...so if you can,...do everything by yourself,...even taking the trolley back to the trolley station on the pavement yourself. if you do feel the need to 'tip' ,..then 20 - 50 peso is enough ( am I being too mean ? )
You will stick out like a sore thumb,..because your white,..which will attract all sorts of attention, good or not-so, but your a young lad and I'm sure you know how to return a 'no thanks' answer with some meaning behind it.
just to advise you on my experiences,... i have more than once met UK guys over there who have been totally scammed by their 'fantastic, beautiful' girlfriends,..so just be on the cautious side,..listen for little hints appearing from her or her family about how nice it would be if you could pay X amount to help with their families costs. Just a wee warning though,..most girls are very good,...but one thing you have to realise is that at a young age like you,...you will have the pick of the bunch. You will see a good few 'oldies' out there with 20- something beauties linking arms in malls etc.,,,even on the way home you will see them at the airport,..taking them back to the UK.
Enough from me,..only my opinion Guy,... go out and experience something you will remember for the rest of your life,..make it good memories.
I'm just back home last week from 4 weeks over there with my lovely Pinoy wife and 2 gorgeous little kids. We're all hating being back here in UK.

    Enjoy bud,

    Jonny

    Good advice from Johnny, there.

I know what you need now - you need to sit back and watch an old BBC comedyfrom 1991 - THIS ONE:

Bob Couttie, whom you will find here from time to time, actually worked on the production.

Times have changed, inasmuch as "matchmakers" do not exist now (and would be illegal if they did), the Internet has taken over, the clothes and the music are different but with those provisos this film is accurate in many respects, and will help to give you a "flavour" of what to expect...it is also quite funny...

You will have the pleasure of spotting a younger version of one of Harry Potter's schoolteachers... and Grace Amilbangsa, the actress who plays Marietta Modestas, became a film director...

Hi Jonny....I got home last month from 6 weeks over there with my lovely Pinoy wife and 2 gorgeous little kids. We're all loving being back here in UK. The Philippines was too stressful to travel with little ones.....

    Ain't life strange!

    Aposhark,
If that's your two kids in your profile picture then you have two beautiful kids about the same age as my wife and me ( 5 year old mestisa and 2 year old Mestiso ).
I must admit that the mixture of short and long haul flights kinda diss-orientated them both, especially on the homeward journey, but we had their small DS computers with them to keep them amused. The TV screens on the HK to Paris flight was also a bonus.
I can say that we all could easily have spent another 4 weeks there no problem at all. We found a lovely new-built swimming pool in some private grounds that we were allowed to swim in every day which kept the kids amused. We also took 4 days out to ferry over to Dumaguete and stay in a lovely resort there. Kids were always met at the front door each morning by a handfull of local kids waiting patiently to play with them. The beach is only 2 minutes walk from our house too which helps.
How does your kids take to eating the fish and rice over there ?
Mines couldn't get enough of the smoked tuna and licheon manok that were on the table every day. And Mangos,..I'm surprised they haven't turned yellow with the amount they ate !!
Nice to know there is others who dare to take their young kids on these long haul holidays to the Phils.

Now back to the OP, (Gav )........ don't have kids till your older !!! lol
