I gather there is a ban on alcohol sales for 2 days before the elections. How far reaching is this? Surely you could just stock up a couple of days beforehand?

In the words of a Filipino friend "panic buying starts NOW!"

The alcohol ban is actually five days long and ends at midnight on Monday (Polling Day). There is also a ban on bank withdrawals of Php100,000, or more, and a similar embargo on the carriage of large amounts of cash, both of which came into effect last Monday.

Does the ban extend to not drinking alcohol? Or simply a ban on purchasing it?

It seems that the Supreme court threw out the 5 day ban and now its back to 2..
Drinking at home and exempted establishments for foreigners is perfectly legal.

The ban - which applies to Filipinos only - is on the purchase and/or consumption of any alcoholic beverage. Hotels that cater mainly to foreigners can apply for an exemption but can only serve foreigners, of course. I understand that major resorts like Boracay are pretty badly affected and thus will be pretty much dead for the week.

A near neighbour decided to have a party last night with nearly 100 guests but it seems he forgot about the alcohol ban and another neighbour - a bar-owning Filipina who obviously wasn't invited - complained to our subdivision guards about the noise. Upshot the Police were called and several arrests made, including the hosts. The complaining neighbour complains about everyone - especially if they're foreigners or associated with foreigners. She's complained about us owning a dog stating they're against the byelaws (they're not!) and has even reported me to BoI claiming I'm an illegal alien (I'm not, I have a residency permit!).

The 5 day ban is still in effect here in Davao ... and one of the city's two four-star hotels completely forgot about applying for an exemption as I discovered last evening to my chagrin. Won't be going there again.

Baldrick - you again. Getting it wrong. We were at S&R Cebu on Friday and there was a notice on the door - NO Alchohol sales 12th & 13th. We bought some wine.

BTW BOI....???? That is Board of Investments. I think you mean as so many do BI as in Bureau of Immigration ( sorry pet hate

I know you're opthalmically-challenged, Blackadder, but my answer mentions "Davao" which is not spelt "C-E-B-U"! Were you to be in Davao, you'd probably also be optically-challenged by now :vhappy:.

:D This pretty much is what we did in Libya some 25 years ago. The biomalt malt extract was available in Libya as baby feed. Only the hops were brought in from outside Libya - I used to take a bottle of hop extract in with me every time I flew in ( tiny bottle was enough about the size of a bottle of tippex or ladies nail varnish).

All brewed in a big plastic dustbin.

    3 tins of biomalt
    6 tins of sugar
    A bit of hop extract
    50 litres water

Leave for a week (stir often for 4-5 days) at about 25 to 30 deg C

Great chilled with a dash of what we called sebhas ( 7Up )
