Hi, does anyone have problems with .mov files taken by iPhones on their pc's?

When I try to look at a folder that contains these files, the window showing the files shuts down very quickly
This is a pain because I cannot use (move) them and they are mixed with other .mov files from my camera which I know are ok as they can be viewed when they are separated from the iPhone ones.

I wish I knew how to isolate them from the other .mov files so I can be productive again
I would like to somehow select them and move them to another folder with a view to be able to convert them to another format that I can see the videos on my pc.

I know "oss" is our resident techie but I am posting this question openly in the hope that iPhone bods can help me also.

My wife puts them on facebook or sends them via Viber. But not sure about putting them on a windows laptop. I will ask her tonight.

Apple, via iTunes screwed every single piece of music i collected over the years. All i get is garbled mish mash. Hate that company with unbridled passion.

I take it this is on a Windows PC?

The shell extension that allows the files to be previewed is probably what is crashing, there's a good chance that one or more of the files has somehow got copied in native binary format from the phone and while it has a .mov extension the bytes that get read by the shell extension are not what the shell extension is expecting and its not been written well enough to handle the exception.

Other possibilities are a virus or just a corrupted file.

The easiest way to deal with moving the files to to open a command prompt and and do an old fashioned xcopy from one place to another, but you could also put the Windows explorer shell into 'details' view for the offending folder, this should just list the files instead of attempting to preview them.

    Thanks for the reply, Jim.
Yes, the laptop is using Windows 8.1
How can I isolate the .mov files taken with the iPhone from the ones taken with my Canon 7D ?
I cannot get to look at the folder which contains the iPhone/Canon "mixed" .mov files as it keeps crashing!
Also, it happens on other folders too.

I have asked Microsoft a question on their website also.

Are you talking about mp3's, Dom?

You would think that Microsoft and Apple would co-operate where files are concerned.

If you change your folder view in the parent folder to the settings shown on the View tab example below i.e. Details view does it still crash when you drill into the folder?

    Mike,
The issue is not with Microsoft.
It is Apple that does not approve of any music that hasn't been purchased from themselves.
I wish I hadn't let my wife have an iPad Mini.. But one can't just say no..... And live to tell the tale....
So, some how, by installing iTunes on my PC, they have corrupted every music file I had.

When I am in "details" it says "not responding" then the window closes down.

If you are around tonight Mike, try installing Teamviewer from here https://www.teamviewer.com/en/index.aspx and I'll see if I can connect up and see what's going on for you, you will have exception messages in the system event log that should give some idea of why explorer is crashing.

Do you have backups of your mp3's on an external hard drive, Dom?

Less than a 1/3, on a of memory stick which I used to move the files onto the laptop.
Whatever was on the external is also cooked.

My wife takes short movie clips on her iPhone and then a) keeps them, b) sends them to her mom and relatives via Viber and c) sometimes puts them on Facebook.

I got her to email me one which I downloaded from my hotmail account to my Windows laptop. I was then able to play it with Quicktime. Simples.

    They are *.mov files.

Could you not simply keep them in a seperate folder?

I just left the trial movie ( *.mov file ) on the desktop. I could equally have stuck it in a folder.

Thanks for asking your wife but I believe it is more problematic than that, John, as oss pointed out.
I wish I had the answer but I do not at present.
I cannot work with the folder that contains .mov files from two different cameras as the folder crashes before it is possible to do anything.
