I will be in manila in a few weeks when my wife submits all the documents to the vfs do i have to get my old passport and new one verified by the post office or will the vfs just take photo copies of them, also i have a letter from my employer stating how long i been with them, contracted hours and and gross pay is this enough or do i need the original contract i have been with them for over 12 years so things like original pay will be very different to what it is now.any help would be great thanks.

You need to supply certified copies of both passports. Only the biodata page needs to be certified but every page needs to be copied.

If I recall correctly the form does ask for the contract of employment. I was in the same position. It will be obvious that things change over 12 years so don't worry about that.

Following on from the above, I would suggest that you should get certified copies done by a solicitor. The UKVI require that the certification takes the form of a stamp which reads 'Certified as a true copy as seen by me' with the name & address of the of the certifier, the date, and the signature. The post office certification does not follow this form, and I have heard of problems that people have encountered using them.

The UK government guidelines on certifying a document can be found here:

After reading your reply and the link as to who can verify a passport i have got the original affidavit of marital status signed and sealed from the british embassy in manila and also a notorial certificate from a solicitor for my marriage of no impediment both with waxed seals and my passport number on both documents would both of these be enough to certify my passport and just photo copy them.

No. Any affidavit of marital status is irrelevant to certifying your passport.

A photocopy is not sufficient, and it is not relevant that the passport number is referenced on other documentation.

A certified copy of any document is either a color or black and white copy that is annotated in the manner described above by the solicitor, once they have had the opportunity to inspect the original.

I suggest that you visit a solicitor and obtain any certified copies that you require from there. You should not be charged more than a few pounds per document.

What other documents must be certified?
It would cost a fortune if I have to get bank statements and payslips etc stamped by a solicitor.

All documents must be originals or certified copies. No plain photocopies are allowed.

Since you must have access to the original in order to obtain a certified copy (since the solicitor will compare the original to the copy when certifying it), it is clear that you will be sending your originals in almost all cases apart from your passport (as UK sponsor) where you should submit a certified copy.

    In general
    :
Bank statements must be original statements as mailed to you.
If you need to print out online statements, then you can take them to the bank and have the bank stamp every page front and back.

If your paystubs are delivered to you as PDF files, then print them out. They are originals since no more accurate record exists, otherwise, if you receive paper paystubs then you already have the original and a certified copy will not be needed.

It is not terribly expensive to have certified copies made. A solicitor will charge a few pounds per document (not per sheet).

I know of some people that didn't but it is a wise move, for the £5 or so it costs for a solicitor to do it we would be foolish not to.
