"Irish bookmakers as of Thursday were giving Philippine Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle 25-to-1 odds of succeeding Pope Benedict XVI when he steps down on February 28.

Betting site PaddyPower.com's odds for Tagle places the Philippine Catholic leader just outside of its Top 10 bets for the papacy. The site’s odds makers in previous days had given the Manila Archbishop as high as 16-to-1 odds, according to Reuters.

PaddyPower's favorites, however, are Cardinal Peter Turkson from Ghana (5-to-2), Archbishop Angelo Scola of Italy (3-to-1) and Cardinal Tarcisio Bertoni, also of Italy (7-to-2). The Catholics of Argentina, Brazil, and Honduras were also well represented in the Top 10.

As of Thursday, Tagle was ranked No. 12.

25/1 is a bit too much of a longshot for me.
Still not bad odds if anyone felt strongly enough.

Having a bet with Paddy Power on the next Pope seems to remind me somehow, of the late Dave Allen. :D

Dave Allen was cripplingly funny on (was it) a Sunday night, I was just a kid but I was doubled up anytime I watched the man.

You're not much older than me mate ;)

My mental age does not quite fit me either, although as a youngster I oddly had a very old man perspective and that has completely turned round now :)

Like you say Oss, even as a kid he was great to watch. I also watched him on a regular basis. If he had been around today he would have been just as funny now as he was then. I am sure.

I used to watch Dave Allan with a religious regularity, what a great stand up comic he was.

I still have a couple of his shows on VHS............:like:

Time to dust them off and watch them again.

Yep... And at 76 years old it seems the Vatican has no desire to see a 50 odd year old become pope in case he changes the church too much for their liking.

In fact, this new pope seems just like the old one in terms of his views on certain subjects.

    New face, same old story!
