OK Micawber, I'll do it CNN Philippines has confirmed that Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte is running for President. In his weekly television program Gikan sa Masa, Para sa Masa, which aired on Sunday, November 22, Duterte said: "The possibility of running [for president] is on the table now." In a phone call with CNN Philippines, Cristopher "Bong" Go, Duterte's executive assistant, said that the mayor's statement means that he will run for president. "'Yun na po 'yun," Go said. The show was taped last Friday evening (November 20). http://cnnphilippines.com/news/2015/11/21/Rodrigo-Duterte-to-run-for-president-2016-elections.html
Good luck to Duterte if he wins, maybe he'll have a good go at sorting out the corruption, but he'll have a mountain to climb - the whole government, local, regional and national are rotten to the core.
He seems to have broad support amongst the populace. Even if he makes a relative small impact, hopefully that will create a road for others to tread.
He picked an odd reason to run IMO It'll be interesting. It's a funny thing, these past couple of days have seen a couple of helicopters circling above.
Duterte may no longer run for president by substitution – election lawyer MANILA, Philippines — Veteran election lawyer Romulo Macalintal expressed doubts, on Monday, that Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte could validly substitute Martin Diño, the person who filed a certificate of candidacy as the presidential candidate of the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino—Lakas ng Bayan party. Macalintal, in a text message to the Philippine Daily Inquirer, recalled that Diño stated in his CoC that he was running for “mayor of Pasay city” although he announced to the media that he was filing his COC to run for president. There has been no satisfactory explanation for the error. “Duterte [therefore] cannot sub for Diño as candidate for president. Diño’s CoC appeared to be defective; hence [it] cannot be the basis of any substitution because it is as if Diño never filed such COC,” the lawyer explained.
