not a surprise that quite a lot of words in use in English today have their origins in the 'cradle of civilisation' from which the Arabic language evolved. There is quite a lot of words in use in English that come from Arabic. Some of them sound French or Italian, but that is just the route they took coming into the Romance and then Germanic languages like English. Apart from the obvious ones like 'harem' , 'mecca', 'sheikh' and 'caravan', etc that have some connotation, even today, with the near east, there is a lot of others that you wouldn't normally associate in that context, including quite a few scientific and mathematical words, like

    algorithim
    alkali
    average
    candy
    cheque
    chemistry
    cork
    jar
    garbage
    hazard
    lacrame
    magazine
    monsoon
    macabre
    mafia
    massage
    nadir
    orange
    ream
    serendipity
    sofa
    sugar
    syrup
    talisman
    tariff
    traffic
    tuna
    typhoon
    zero
