Residents told to leave Whaley Bridge after heavy rains damage reservoir above town https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news...r-homes-evacuated-floods-hit-north-of-england
Oh yet another thread about climate change. Or maybe it's about damage to a spillway of a dam that was built in 1831 that may or may not cause the dam to collapse. There may be oscillating sphincters among those in the water company responsible for ensuring the dam's fitness for purpose and that the spillway channels are dredged and kept clear of old bicycles, mattresses and other junk discarded by fly-tippers. We'll know soon enough but in all the photos of this site published in the last 24+ hours, none show any emergency remedial work being carried out. But given who started this thread, it is safe to assume he intends it to be another platform to preach climate change. You know what, I am sick and tired of this topic especially when it is hijacked by the bleeding-heart hypocrites of stage and film and Big Business. For the last two or three days the mainly American monied have had their chauffeur-driven limos take them to Los Angeles airport where they boarded no fewer than 114 big jet aeroplanes and flew 6,560 miles to Palermo in northwest Sicily - pumping just shy of 800 tonnes of carbon into the atmosphere. On arrival they were taken to an exclusive resort whose accommodations cost around $2,000 a night in a fleet of gas-guzzling supercars. Others boarded their multi-million Pound ocean-going 'yachts' conveniently awaiting them in Cannes and burned a few thousand gallons of marine diesel on passage to the resort. Katie Perry and Orlando Bloom cadged a lift on David Geffen's massive $400 million 453-foot Rising Sun. Their hosts were that 'woke' outfit called Google who organised this so-called climate change 'camp' as a three-day conference though the word 'camp' may be code for "networking party". Prince Harry reportedly attended and said a few words whilst barefoot (why?) and other attendees included Diane von Furstenberg, Barak Obama, Bradley Cooper, Harry Styles, Gayle King, Leonardo di Caprio, Naomi Campbell, Stella McCartney and Chris Martin. Coldplay and Spanish singer-songwriter Rosalia were the entertainment. That little beanfeast reportedly cost Google $20 million; remember that when you see "Ad" or "sponsored content" in your Google search results. I certainly won't be paying attention to anything these hypocrites have to say on ecological issues.
In other news "Greta Thunberg is to sail across the Atlantic in a high-speed racing yacht next month to attend UN climate summits in the US and Chile as part of a sabbatical year the 16-year-old Swedish climate activist will spend in the US. “Good news! I’ll be joining the UN Climate Action Summit in New York, COP25 in Santiago … I’ve been offered a ride on the 60ft racing boat Malizia II. We’ll be sailing across the Atlantic Ocean from the UK to NYC in mid August,” Greta tweeted. The journey will take two weeks. The campaigner, whose solo protest last year sparked the Fridays for Future global school climate strike movement, said in June she would be taking a year off school to attend the summits, on 23 September in New York and 2-13 December in Santiago, which she described as “pretty much where our future will be decided”. But she said she did not yet know how she was going to get there. “It’s on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean,” she said. “And there are no trains going there. And since I don’t fly, because of the enormous climate impact of aviation, it’s going to be a challenge.” https://www.theguardian.com/environ...o-sail-across-atlantic-for-un-climate-summits With 0 carbon emmisions
She'd be a danger to fish; I suggest she walks. But I do feel that you're being overly generous - the precocious kid should pay you for the privilege of you sponsoring her!
Been thinking about the concrete slab failure and remembered seeing vegitation on the spillway you can see it here at 1"06" my guesse is that the extreme water force stripped the "plants" and was able to power wash the underlying "mud" in gaps between the cement slabs undermining the structure
"The tragedy of our times is that the gathering collapse of our life support systems has coincided with the age of public disservice. Just as we need to rise above self-interest and short-termism, governments around the world now represent the meanest and dirtiest of special interests. In the United Kingdom, the US, Brazil, Australia and many other nations, pollutocrats rule. The Earth’s systems are breaking down at astonishing speed. Wildfires roar across Siberia and Alaska – biting, in many places, deep into peat soils, releasing plumes of carbon dioxide and methane that cause more global heating. In July alone, Arctic wildfires are reckoned to have released as much carbon into the atmosphere as Austria does in a year: already the vicious twister of climate feedbacks has begun to turn." https://www.theguardian.com/comment...ute-politics-climate-crisis#comment-131781492
Fresh flood warnings have been issued across western Britain, including in Whaley Bridge – just over a week after residents of the Derbyshire town were allowed to return home after a dam emergency. Up to a month’s worth of rain was expected to drench north and south-western England as well as most of Wales on Friday, the Met Office said. A yellow warning would remain in place until 10pm, with some places potentially getting 80mm of rainfall. https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news...ay-get-up-to-a-months-worth-of-rain-on-friday
