A very contentious topic in the past. Also one of the most “popular of topics” too especially in terms of what hoops our Filipina wives have had to jump through to get to the UK and get work in the UK.

Without degenerating into political debate I am interested to see what we think about the end of freedom of movement for Eastern Europeans that is imminent. And might that have impact on those Filipina’s entering the U.K. in the future?

Has freedom of movement for Europeans to the U.K. come to an end?

Nope not yet, it ends at the end of the transition period, from 1st of January 2021 it is gone.

Well it's not just Eastern Europeans it's all Europeans apart from the Irish who are free to live and work in the UK through the long standing CTA.

Highly emotive subject, will be surprising if it does not get very political very fast but let's see :)

To me the only difference from the viewpoint of Filipinos is that this country (England) really doesn't want any immigration and it will continue to get harder and harder for anyone to come to the UK for any reason, unless they are seriously wealthy, the wealthy will continue to see and have access to freedoms the rest of us are denied.

Yes it is emotive but I am not thinking of it from the political standpoint. And it should be possible to discuss it without our personal political persuasions entering in to it.

Yes it ends on 31st December This year or is it the end of January 2021? Do we think this will have an impact in any way? Some employers might struggle to hire the people they need. I think they will from what I am seeing, hearing and reading. Or will they, if business shrinks at the same time due to Brexit and Covid 19.

Applicants for visas will need a job waiting for them and to be earning £24000 per annum. But there will be exceptions. Employers will need to apply for a license (I think I read). All applicants will need to show proficiency in English. Not just the Filipinos.

Points based system is far better than FOM.

That’s what is being implemented Druk, a points based system, is it not? But how do you expect it to pan out? Do you think FOM will stop dead or do you think the government will lower the bar in some way? Employers (some at least will be crying out for workers as happened with the fruit picking this year) will be hurting ...

Am not clear on all of this so am asking you guys how you believe things will develop.

It's the 31st of December, to my knowledge the UK Government has not asked for an extension by the deadline which was July 1st 2020.

Points based systems favour the wealthy.

They are full of discriminatory shortcuts.

And it appears to be a points based system that is being implemented.

Thank goodness, we need doctors, nurses, engineers etc far more than unskilled migrants.

Not saying this is right or wrong but it is obvious to me that various businesses up and down the country will be crying out for unskilled workers in the new year. I see many businesses up here in the North West like that.

I am 100% certain the North-West of England has enough unemployed people to fill those vacancies

In general yes, you place a value on individuals, you usually won't get in if you don't have degree level education, you won't have that if your family was very poor, yes some families sacrifice everything for the education of their children but for most it is impossible.

The UK is planning fast track visas for people with a Phd, not many people get a Phd for free.

If you are rich enough you will get fast tracked as a potential investor.

We need all kinds of migrants, we are an aging population the ratio of workers to pensioners is getting worse all the time.

I am not certain of that. You might be right. Unemployment hasn’t been very high up here in recent times but that will change over the next few months, I expect. What I have seen is a surfeit of imported unskilled labour across the entire region in huge quantities. As in colossal.

I feel sorry for the chap that used to do the rounds at our office, every week he and his employees would wash about 4 cars for this business, and he built up a good trade on the industrial estate doing quite a few cars every Thursday, his wife was contracted to clean our office twice a week as well, this pandemic will have been devastating for him, he charged £10 per car wash.

I only got mine done once in a while but he always did a good job.
