Is it possible to apply for one from the Philippines/overseas?

    Doubt it.

We have an Irish lad (southern Ireland) who started working with us last year, there was no problem with him working for us until he got his NI number, the appointment to get his NI number took him about 3 weeks after arrival.

Just wondering. I know there is an interview involved, so I thought you could arrange for one in the Consulate. Hahaha...

Employers are asking for one. But of course I don't have one since I haven't been to the UK.

I'm not sure if it's still the process but it used to involve an interview in many cases.

The Employers can take you on without NI number. However I believe you will just have to pay Super TAX, then claim back overpaying your tax when you do your self assessment.

I took my wife to the JobCenter Plus site in Tooting (over an hour from where we live) to get her NI. You sit an interview and 3-4 weeks later you get a number.

    You'll have no problems.

Just for your info that National Insurance number is your unique 'account number' to which allocations of correct tax and NI deductions can be made. This number consists of two letters, six numbers and one letter
It's your number and it never changes.
It also ensures entitlement to UK benefits.

You can't organise your NI number until you are here in the UK.

You do not need your NI number before starting work. But the process of getting one should have at least started.

Until you have been allocated you NI number you'll likely be taxed by an employer on either an "emergency tax code" or possibly a "BR" tax code.
The emergency tax code is 1060L, and this means you'll be allowed a tax free personal annual allowance of £10,600.
Anything above the £10,600 will be taxable.

The "BR" tax code (Basic Rate) means that you won't get any tax free personal allowance at all and you'll pay 20% tax on all your earnings.
On the positive side you'll get all overpaid tax refunded from HMRC.

There is no Super Tax, the worst that could happen is that you pay at month 1 rate which won't really make much difference, there is a short interview.

They still hold the interviews, there are specific job centres which deal with new NI applications, you have to follow the procedure as set out in the link oss provided.

Once you have attended the interview you are given a letter which you can present to an employer covering you to work until you get the NI number in the post a couple of weeks later.

I agree with @Timmers My wife will be applying for her NI Number as soon as she collects her BRP. BRP is not relevant to you as you have a British Passport.

That's what I thought Timmers. But I just wondered whether or not it might be different in the case of a British passport holder.
Be interesting to learn how it all pans out

It will be interesting to see how it pans out whether @knightstrike can obtain the NI number easily or he has to jump through a couple of hoops like our loved ones did.

I hope he does make it here to the UK, I'm looking forward to see how he likes the place and if he finds his dream redhead.

I'm putting UK on hold for now. I've got a dream job that I applied for in Passau, Germany. I'm short-listed currently. If that doesn't pan out, I already have an offer waiting in UK.

By the way, the HR who conducted my Skype interview is a redhead too, and a cute one at that. So redheads it seems are my destiny. Hhahahahahahahha...

    ------------

I'll inform people here, if I do apply for the NI. I'll make a personal guide on how to apply for an NI, to help others especially Pinoys/Pinays and people with cases such as mine.

Yeah it seems. While a lot of people dislike or even hate redheads, I'm one of the few who are infatuated with them.

The interview is only an Identity check and with a British Passport a formality

All NI Numbers are issued from Glasgow, there is usually no interview.
IF Interview, necessary then this may take place at a locally employment centre.

Application is made by phone, you are given a reference no. then wait for application form.
If you don't hear from them after 2wks, then call back.

I am quite fond of redheads too, but I was actually thinking of all the job offers you have gotten from around the world!

That is not what I was told when I rang the application centre last week. They said my wife would have to go for an interview.
