Worrying news.. I've told my wife to get indoors and get drink and food ready to sit it out. She is on the 3rd floor so any localised flooding should hopefully not be a problem. But still, the friends and family I have in it's path :(

Shades of Typhoon Sendong, last year. Illegal logging was held as being partly to blame for the devastating effects.

Oddly, the thing that people mostly run short of is water. There is any amount of water about, during and after a typhoon, but none of it is safe to drink.

It's absolutely worth while to fill some plastic containers from the tap before hand - the more the merrier - don't fill them.right up - leave a small air space so they float. Many stores sell emergency lights which last a long time if you use the LED function only. It is worth getting a new light as the old ones don't use LEDs.

A friend in Cagayan de Oro just remarked, "This City of Gold has 602,000 people, one terror typhoon and two rubber boats!"

Here's another image showing the predicted track - or rather, what the Philippines, Japan and the USA think typhoon PABLO will do..

On the limited basis of experience with ships dodging typhoons in the South China Sea, I have a good deal of confidence in PAGASA and I think their track is most likely to be correct

Latest info says the RED Pagasa track is the most likely. CDO will get it directly followed by Southern Cebu & Dumaguette. Everyone in its footprint WILL know about it though.

The advice about water is bang on.

Looking at the updates, it has weakened a little?

It did surprisingly little damage to Palau, but the Phillipines is another matter. Still looks to be heading for CDO.

PAGASA got the tracking wrong... They had the eye directly over Tagbilaran... The system completely lost steam when it hit land fall and into the Bukidnon mountains.. Kite flying weather thank goodness.
    Drama over.

It uprooted a tree in my wife's grandmothers land, just at the back of the house. Thankfully, no damage to the house and everyone was safely inside when this happened.

I know, these Typhoons cost a lot of lives and it is always a worry when we hear one is growing in the Pacific.

Kate McGeown of the BBC was saying on the news here that the casualties would have been a lot worse if precautions hadnt been taken in the run-up to the arrival of the typhoon, on this occasion.

Despite many warnings, including pleas from from me and the wife, far too many of the extended family in the Compostela Valley area would not leave their homes. Fortunately most of them are known to be safe despite many houses being 'lost'.

Hope they're not thinking I can replace the loses.

I am seeing reports of c. 450 confirmed dead and c. 300 missing, but also reports of c.300 fishermen missing. I'm going to assume that is a separate 300, total c. 1,000 lives lost.
