i had an offer accepted to purchase a house locally earlier this month. i received my solicitors paperwork--and made a shock discovery.

it seems i will be liable for the above surcharge--as my wife owns her property back in the philippines.---even if she is not party to the purchase of this place i am buying. in cash terms--it means an extra £6300.

    any advice guys ?

It is extremely unlikely that any checks could be done in the UK to prove your loved one owns property in our beloved Philippines.

I have no proof of that but I'm pretty confident that is the case, save yourself a few bob to buy us drinks in a few weeks :)

thats what i think. and its not as if she will ever live there again. its for her daughter--if she wants to live there.

    Really  ?

They count property on the other side of the planet as a second usable home ?

    Wow!

Thanks for this bit of knowledge bigmac!
