Location:
The Philippines is an island nation located in South East Asia, about
1,210 km (750 miles) east of the coast of Vietnam and is separated in
the north from Taiwan, on the east by the Philippine Sea, on the south
by the Celebes Sea, and on the west by the South China Sea.
Size:
The Philippines has 7,000 islands and has a land area of about 300,000
sq km (about 115, 830 sq mi). Roughly the same size as Arizona.

Climate: The Philippines
is part of the Tropics, so the climate is hot and humid year round with
a mean annual temperature of about 80°F (27°C). The relative humidity
averages about 77%. The rainy season is from May to November, which is
the summer monsoon, while the dry season occurs during the winter monsoon
from December to April. Typically, the weather is cool from November to
February, while it's very hot and dry from March to May. The rainiest
times are from June to October. The average rainfall is about 80 inches
a year (2030 mm).
History: Many
groups of people are believed to have reached the Philippines thousands
of years ago by crossing a land bridge that is no longer in existence.
Ferdinand Magellan, a Portuguese navigator for Spain, arrived in the Philippines
in 1521 and the Philippines became a Spanish colony in 1580. The Philippines
were ceded by Spain to the US in 1898 following the Spanish-American War.
They attained their independence in 1946 after being occupied by the Japanese
in World War II. Today the Philippines is an independent democracy.
Attractions: The
Philippines has many beautiful beaches, excellent diving and numerous
outdoor attractions. The island of Boracay, off the north-western tip of
Panay, is particularly nice. Puerto Galera, on the island of Mindoro is
also a nice beach. Puraran, on Catanduanes, off Luzon, has a beautiful
beach, reef and good surf. There are countless other spectacular sights
scattered throughout the Philippines, including the famous Chocolate Hills
of Bohol and the the volcanic crater Lake Taal. Overall, with fantastic
scenery and the friendliness of the Filipinos, its hard to beat the Philippines
as a holiday destination.
