"1/2. First of a two-part documentary following four first-generation immigrants as they try to learn English. Each one is taught by ordinary British people, and live for a week with families who apply their own ways to help their guest. All four entered Britain more than a year ago and hail from Poland, Colombia, China and the Democratic Republic of Congo, but none of them has managed to learn the language in their time here so far. Now each of them has their own special reason for wanting to learn, whether for work and the chance of a fresh future, or just as a possible end to loneliness."

    Episode 1

"The four immigrants, who entered Britain over a year ago, come originally from Poland, Colombia, China and the Democratic Republic of Congo. None of the four has managed to learn English so far.

Now, each of them has their own special reason for wanting to learn: for some it means more opportunities for work, and the chance of a fresh future for them and their family; while for others it offers a possible end to loneliness.

Why Don't You Speak English? provides the immigrants with a crash course for learning English, while for the host families it offers a first-hand insight into immigration - how do communities exist in the UK where virtually no English is spoken, and what can the British families do to help their new friends integrate better?

My wife was amazed at the low standard of English. The program wasn't as good as I thought it might be but Mrs Ash was intrigued by it.

2/2. "In the conclusion of the documentary following four first-generation immigrants as they try to learn English, the participants reach the halfway point of the process. Inviting their British hosts to live with them for a week, they give them a crash course in immigration, revealing why people decide to move to Britain and the difficulties that can be encountered with communication."
