Does he want to do something space/planetary related when he is older? Have you got him a telescope?

He has been very keen about all things to do with space for a long time now.
Money has been tight so I haven't bought him a telescope yet.
I have followed his interests and bought things but he does change these at his age.
I am waiting to see if his interest in space remains strong.

Yeah it should be interesting. I've set my alarm to watch the live landing coverage - which I gather starts at 7.15pm gmt on Thursday.

Would be interested to watch, unfortunately it's scheduled to land halfway through Spurs Europa League match against Wolfsberger AC. Priorities and all that
Just a thought is that 7:15 UK time or GMT, or are they the same at the moment???

    7. 15pm GMT and 7.15pm UK time. They are the same until British summer time starts in spring. The UK is then GMT +1 hour for the summer before reverting back to GMT in autumn.

That’s what I said in a parallel thread. :D It’s essentially a geological itinerary. With the rock samples being collected and stored for collection at a future point in time.

It's very exciting to see "Perseverance" land on Mars today but I am now wondering why they didn't wait 10 years and send the samples back at the same time.
I suppose there could be data sent back by telemetry not long after the rover has landed and collected some samples.

Interesting question. Just guessing that they wanted to get what they could get now in the way of information and wait for the rest later.

They surely won’t be able to get all they need to know from photos or spectroscopy so would ultimately need rock samples and boots on the ground. I hope I am around to see it all.

I think there is a limit to what their equipment can tell them that could be sent back by telemetry. I suspect so. They think there are carbonates there, for example but they may not be carbonates. There are indications only.
