That's unfair, Andrew. The Home Office has today admitted that it made an error in saying that Shane Ridge could not remain in the UK and it has apologised to the young man.

However, the Home Office is far too big thanks to Hague stripping the Foreign Office of Passport and Visa issuance (and causing much other damage besides) and May's grab of Customs Officers (from HM Customs, (one of) the oldest and longest-running government departments) to form Border Farce. The bigger the organisation, the greater the risk of errors being made.

I agree. I had missed the apology - but the Home Office is as you say a by-word for inefficiency. I also agree with you about May and the Border Farce and Passport shambles. The woman is certainly unfit to hold the office of Prime Minister.

    What did they apologies for??
The rules? Or implementing them to the letter?
I checked the HMPO site and the rules they stated to him are all there.. (amazingly)

They quoted the rules correctly and under the rules he can stay. They simply wrote him the wrong letter.

    Here`s what I read 2 days ago on Gov.uk

If you were born in the UK on or after 1 January 1983

You don’t automatically get British citizenship if you were born in the UK.

If you were born in the UK on or after 1 January 1983, you’ll be a British citizen if your mother or father was either:

    • a British citizen when you were born
    • ‘settled’ in the UK when you were born
‘Settled’ means you can stay in the UK without any time restrictions. This includes people who have one of the following:

In most cases you’ll be a British citizen if your mother or father was born in the UK or naturalised there at the time of your birth.

If you were born before July 2006, your father’s British nationality will normally only pass to you if he was married to your mother at the time of your birth.

So where did they get it wrong?

A spokesperson said: ‘We have now established that Mr Ridge is automatically a British citizen. We have spoken with Mr Ridge to apologise for this error and the distress caused.

‘When Mr Ridge applied for Right of Abode, we did not identify that his maternal grandmother was British and that as a result his mother had settled status in the UK at the time of his birth.’
