The stress of the Supermarket

I don't know about you chaps but I suffer a great deal of stress when I'm shopping in any of the big name supermarkets including SM in the Phils.

From dodgy trolleys to the lady in front of you checking out and only starting to rummage in her handbag to pay once she has packed away her shopping.

At Christmas time I went shopping in the local Paranaque SM with the loved one and both times after a quick sortie inside I had to go outside and wait for her thus prompting a small tampo.

I cant stand the damn places, when I go shopping I leave it till late at night to prevent high blood pressure.

Does anyone else have similar experiences?

I think we all hate shopping amongst really large crowds, but I think we also get used to "regular crowds". I mean, today I was out in Manchester getting some stuff, though the crowds didn't bother me so much, Market Street certainly did!

But then, it's not crowds that bother me. It's people getting in my way (hogging the footpaths or doorways).

I agree, people getting under the feet add to strain of it all. Because I dislike shopping I have to pick my times to shop when I know less people will be around. Another thing I have a problem with is ATM queues, I'm always behind the one who has brought all the families cards with them, just has you think they're done they pop another card in the machine.

I think I'm getting like Mr Angry off the Steve Wright show LOL

For me, I cannot stand queues.

My (ex) was once horrified when I said F**k this, and walked around SM putting our (thankfully few) items back on the shelves.

Long queue, purely due to the idiot girl on the till.

I quite like shopping over there the malls are fine and the supermarkets are great, the checkout girls are fairly efficient and who would pack all your bags for you and then take your trolley's to your car in the UK?

However I get unbelievably stressed in the supermarket, my stress comes purely from all the crap that we didn't need getting added to the trolley while mentally I am adding it all up and wondering if I will have that much cash when we reach the checkout, worse we would reach the checkout and while I am left to wait in the queue she would go off and buy even more clothes that the kids would only wear a few times before they outgrew them.

Sounds like me and you should go shopping together, at about 4am when no one else is there

I'm the same as you, why do the girls buy unnecessary stuff, you only have to open their wardrobe to prove what you said is a fact, the unworn shoes, dresses and that expensive designer handbag.

Maybe one of the girls on the site could counter our allegations.

    I think I must have a non-standard model.

In Puregold and SM, Kay never buys anything that is not on the list and is in and out in a few minutes. If shopping for household goods she shops like a man - marches in, sees what she needs, pays for it and marches out. What goes on in clothes and shoe shops I have no idea, as I am never allowed near that process.

    I am NOT complaining!

Well, now you know what the punters think and maybe you could take some of our observations on board :)

    What about a Mans night?

I am one of those people who enjoy grocery shopping and so does my husband though we don't shop in SM. We usually do ours in Unimart or Rustan's which is closer to our place if we need a few things ASAP. We also don't do clothes shopping or home shopping in the grocery, there is a mall for that.

Funny, it is me who is doing the metal math on how much we will end up paying because my husband has a penchant for picking up the expensive brand for drinks, cheese, milk, olives, etc. He finds its funny that I control which brand to pick to save money.

Oh if you rummage through my closet now, you'd see brand new clothes, shoes and designer handbags but that doesn't mean I don't need it or I wont use it. It's a matter of time when I'll use it for the perfect occasion. I don't like panicking that I don't have the right dress for a certain event and run off to the mall and purchase one at the last minute.

And especially with my designer bags, I'm not in a hurry to rip off the tags and use it.

I went to some supermarket with my wife and the mother in law a couple of times. Just seemed like back home though slightly different products of course. Though the checkout girls were more attentive and younger.

Good point you make about hubby picking up the brand names, we are all guilty of that because the advertising people are very clever, they want us to associate quality with a brand which is not always the case. The brand names are very good at getting us to buy their product whether we are aware of it or not. For example, cigarette advertising has been banned in the UK for years but if I lined up 3 formula 1 racing cars (always advertised cigarettes) in colours black, gold and red & white most of us here would instantly know the brand of cigarettes they were advertising because of brand association.

Very clever these advertising folk, they know the phycology of the average punter like you and I.

I guess it's also a lack of knowledge of what product works the best and is value for money so some people would depend on brand recall and the more expensive one thinking that the ore expensive it is, the better.

Do you not find that the clothes have gone out of fashion before you've worn them or like me do you leave them in the wardrobe until the fashion comes back round again? :)

Fantastic to hear both sides of the argument.

I agree there, I think your average lady is more aware of what to buy in a supermarket and certainly more thrifty, out of the supermarket and into the clothes and shoe shops, I think that is a different ball game.

No, not really because I tend "stock up" on classic pieces like basic black dress, a white tops, a pair of jeans, etc. And it usually does come back every season in just a varying style. In handbags, I tend to go for classic designer pieces or "It" bags that end up being classics in a few years.

Clothes, shoes and bags is a totally different ballgame. You need a good mix or else you'll look shabby all the time or drain your bank account. You get what you pay for though like a purse from Primark or Forever 21 will last me a few seasons but then a bag from YSL or Balenciaga will last me years and years. My oldest designer bag is almost 8 years old and still in good shape. Men though, I notice would easily change their clothes and shoes since it's usually the cheaper or generic brands.
