Would big Sam be the right choice as next England manager?

Absolutely not. But the problem is John, I honestly can't think of anyone better.

I fear it will be the same old story, easy qualification in major tournaments followed by certain disappointment.

England don't have the heart, you could see the big difference between England and Wales most recently in the Euros, Wales were a team full of hope and confidence and it was apparent for all of us to see.

It's the perfect time for Big Sam because nobody wants to go to Russia or Qatar anyway. Once those two shams are over, maybe we can get rid of the corrupt practices and return the game to people who love it.

    ....And for my next wish.....

I like your optimism Chris :)

Its pretty obvious to all that Russia and Qatar won the right to hold the next World Cups because they had bigger brown envelopes than the other contenders. I really hope you're right, this FIFA business has been a total embarrassment, there must be a more honest way of deciding which country should host the World Cup.

I really hope Sam does well for England but it is very hard to be optimistic as you know.

Doing well is now seen by some as reaching the semi finals, doing well is winning. The England team should look at the Welsh, look at the Germans and look then at the flamboyant teams and learn.
I hope Sam does well, he needs a progressive backroom staff.

Was there anyone else suitable "no" which is a poor state of affairs

    Who knows..??

The media, shocked by the appointment, is already knocking the guy around, even before a ball is kicked in anger,
It is slightly, no, no, it is grossly unfair, but until the media learns to actually back and support the teams and the managers, England hasn't got a chance.

He may just instil a little bit of the "Ranieri" factor into a bunch of selfish primadonnas and perform the miracle.

I reckon I am going a bit too far with this.......

I can't remember ever being over the moon about an England manager appointment.

After Ramsay, we had Revie, who had produced the ugliest football with players capable of doing so much more
After he trotted off to the UAE, it was Greenwood, an FA man who couldn't work out that Shilton was a mile better than Clemence. And it should have been Cloughie anyway
After him we had Bobby Robson, who was a nice chap and a great manager, but again it should have been Brian Clough
Then Graham Taylor came, and did I not like that!
A brief respite with Venables and some good times, and the one time I wanted who they chose (but I liked Mighty Mouse too)
I never liked Glenn Hoddle, and he didn't change my mind. So talented for such a dull man.
Keegan. Tactically inept, and shown up time and again. All mouth and passion, but very little up top.
Sven. Never even a player at the top level. And Ulrika? Ulrika???
Steve McClaren. If ever a man has built his life on the gullibility of others, it's Stevie Mac
    Capello. Vini, Vidi, Perderi.
Roy Hodgson. Underwhelmed by almost everything the man has ever done.
    And now Big Sam.

Well. He can't be worse than that lot.

You forget the great Joe Mercer between Ramsey and Revie albeit in a caretaker capacity

Then we would need to include Howard Wilkinson, Peter Taylor and another one so obscure that I can't recall his name.

Stuart Pearce so good we needed a goal and his final substitution was to swop goalie s
That might of been at man city though

Its not just about Managers though, where are the characters off the England team ?? That one special player that you think can lead the rest and turn around a game, Rooney ?????? don't me me laugh.

Becks, Gasgoine, Platt, Lineker, Shearer.... there s a lot more but we have no players in the current England setup who could hold a light to any off them.

    Interesting reading this old stuff.

Yes, Cloughie. The best England manager never to manage England.

Clough and Revie were at each other’s throats.

I was actually at one of the 1966 games. A schoolboy of 10. But watched it all the same. It was the opening game against the dirty Argentinians. Nil nil.

Yes Cloughie , the people's choice , but not a hope of landing the job and ruffling a few feathers .
Would've been nice to see what he could've achieved .
