I went to one show in the local pavilion when British wrestling was nearing the end.

One of the main events was Giant Haystacks vs Jamaica George. It was a devestating defeat for George. I don’t know how he wasn’t rushed to intensive care in the Princess of Wales Hospital. I truly feared for his wellbeing.

You can imagine this 8/9 year old’s astonishment when he took a toilet break later during the show, only to see George (who at that moment in time was the only black person in this part of South Wales) sitting at a cafeteria table chatting away without a care in the world with some other guy (promoter, I suspect).

    Mind well and truly blown.

I met a guy in wanchai, oldish geezer from Milton Keynes,he was on holiday in Hong Kong,he told me he used to be a professional wrestler called the masked mauler, but I suppose wearing a mask anyone could have used that claim to fame.

My father was an amateur boxer in the army during the war and prior to the war, I still have his trophies from competitions he won in Scotland.

He told me as a child that the vast majority of wrestling holds were inescapable once achieved, the whole thing was acting, just a choreographed drama played out for audience titillation.

Didn't stop him watching it at the weekends, on the odd occasion that I have watched it for a minute or more it would appear to be even more of a staged act these days, I just don't get the point of it at all.

Boxing on the other hand is mostly real, although I detest that sport as well.

I don't think anybody is stupid enough to imagine that there is not some pre-staging or 'fixing'.

It is great entertainment for MOST people, and the genuine skills of the participants cannot be denied.

There will always be the negative miseries who seek to spoil the enjoyment of others though.

My dad was a boxer too, in his youth. Middleweight Champion of the Royal Navy at one point. So, I know what's what. :like:

Sometimes its just about escapism and getting the brain rested by letting others do the work!

My late father who had a very good job used to come in and watch Tom and Jerry (I know they are not real) but he often said it cleared his mind from the day so he got to enjoy his evening with his kids more, he was a great father

Given a choice between Wrestling and Tom and Jerry, Tom and Jerry wins hands down any day of any week :)

For me these days I would put on Rick and Morty for a bit of escapism.
