Just starting to take photos at home with tripod, speedlite and remote wireless shutter release.
It is so hard to get them both happy and facing the camera.

I will persist until I get them both facing the camera and no tears or cries :erm:
It is an on-going labour of love :)

It is cut off again on the r.h. side.
I cropped it to look nice :erm:
Can you fix it when you get home?
Is it something I am doing?

    Nice picture Mike;)

I would have liked to have seen more of your daughter in the frame, though for my taste looking directly at the camera is not always what I like to see (I like those candid shots or stolen moments as Joy calls them). Your daughter also has very nice eyes that draw you into the picture, I assume her sibling does but is sat in a position where we can't really see them too well. I bet that at some point soon you will get them both sat up directly facing the camera and you will get that "wow" shot.

I have been taking pictures of my soon to be niece and I know how a pain it is to take pictures of young children. I have deleted more pictures than I have kept..

Will get a flash later this year though.....

Ah Sean what Mike is asking is why VBulletin has cropped the frame, he had more of his daughter on the right hand side of the frame, in the past Vbulletin would have allowed the overflow as his shot is slightly too large for the page.

Hmmm. No doubt one of the "improvements" with the recent upgrades to the newer version of Vbulletin.

I shall try and remedy this in about 6 weeks...

kids may not play ball with you when you need to ake pictures, but it is a very nice photo all the same...:like:

Now, you mind how you treat them, because ultimately they will have the power to choose your nursing home.............;)

I think it is an issue with the changes made in Vbulletins stylevars (the things we admins can use to create new styles). I did see some message telling me about this a week before I flew out but decided I could not spend the time needed to redesign the layout at that time. I did make a quick go at designing a new design but really never made much of it yet. It is called "Test Design" and was nothing other than a quick mod from the standard style from vbulletin I plan to modify further at a later date. Though I just selected it and I think you guys can as well - and yes it does fix the issue (though it is not a fixed style in case you have a big monitor)...

hmmm, I like wide screen :)

That looks lie a good option to have, if I ever wanted to post a really large image then you just have to tell folk to view it under 'The Big Photo' style :)

The problem with floating styles is that more and more people have large widescreen monitors and this makes it difficult to scan through the forums like you can easily do with a fixed style.

I will play around with it when I am in the UK again, seeing how the new changes affect my designs.

I also need to play around with the search bar, I know where the code is and I can remove it but placing it where I want to (and not in the default position) has so far been a pain in the neck for me... There are some neat vbulletin designs out there and rather than pay fo some copy that numerous sites have, I plan to design some nice ones just for this site.

That "Test Design" did the trick, Sean.
It was great to see the full picture and how the photo adjusted automatically when the Favorites vertical bar was dragged left and right.
    Excellent :like:

    Thanks Jim,

As you will probably know, it was a nightmare getting this.

A baby next to a toddler :frust:

I have a plan to get better ones, hopefully it will work.
I am changing a few settings on the camera (Picture Styles, colour space, one shot instead of AI servo) and will get their mummy standing next to the camera.
I will then try to get them in place and zip out of the way asking mummy to attract their attention as I press the wireless shutter release.
    Fingers crossed.
Do you have any knowledge of the changes in bold?
Picture Styles - someone recommended using standard or portrait instead of faithful.
I read it was better to use AI servo for kids then someone else said one shot is better.
Someone told me to change the colour space from sRGB to Adobe RGB.

I am worried that my shots are not as sharp as they should be!

Oh for most things Mike use One Shot, AI servo is really only workable for sports, yes the kids move fast but they move back and forward and if you know when you got the lock you can release the shutter when they return to where they were, or you can grab another lock with a half press of the shutter very quickly.

RAW does not have an assigned colour space so you can choose later when you are outputting to print or screen which colour space to use.

If you were using a Colour space in camera then it should mostly be sRGB if you are working jpegs on screen on a home computer, Adobe RGB is really for professional level printing, like book publishing and fine arts, not sure but the 7D also probably has ProPhoto?

Picture Styles only affect Jpeg output from the camera they don't affect RAW output, you can apply picture styles as a post process to RAW images but if you are only outputting Jpeg then the selected style will already be applied.

RAW is just so much more flexible than Jpeg that I have never used the colour space and picture style settings on my cameras much easier to work the image myself later.

In Lightroom under Camera Calibration I will sometimes change the Profile which is very similar to working with Picture Styles, I quite like Adobe Standard but will also use Camera Standard, Camera Faithful and Camera neutral, it's worth playing about to see what you like.

Your shots look fine in terms of sharpness you are definitely getting L quality pictures, maybe a little bit of sharpening might help but don't overdo it, Canon files take sharpening quite well though indeed it is required in order to get the best out of any Canon file.

The one of the kids by the fence is too dark really, but it was a nice moment with them.

    Thank you Anne.
The only problem is how quick they grow up :(
I want them to stay just as they are but, as you can well imagine, my wife is happy for them to grow up a little more so life is easier for her.
She doesn't have anyone to help her when I am working and it is really hard for Mums to bring kids up when Dads are out of the house so much.
