Whether you're cooking on gas or are a convert to charcoal here's the perfect way to cook when the sun is out

    1. Outback Spectrum 3-Burner

There's a new version of this barbecue out for 2013 and not only does it look great, but it's packed with top-spec features, too, including enamelled grills, a griddle, warming rack, temperature gauge and lava rocks. Comfortably catering for eight people, it's definitely worth the extra dosh if you have it.

    £290, outbackbbqshop.co.uk

    2. Bodum Fyrkat

Why stop at barbecuing in your back garden? Bodum makes two portable barbecues – one charcoal and this gas one – both of which come in a range of funky colours, which are great for picnics. This one means you're instantly ready to go, minimising the chance of growling stomachs for hours on end.

    £105, bodum.com

    3. Jamie Oliver Kettle BBQ

No need for singed sausages and tasteless chops with this small, well-made and great-value barbecue that's quick to heat, creates a good airflow for maximum heat, cooks evenly and is easy to move and store. The basin vents can get a bit clogged up with ash.

    £44.99, homebase.co.uk

    4. Sophie Conran Portable Set

This has everything you need for eating delicious chargrilled food al fresco at festivals, on the beach or on your roof terrace. The price tag means it's a great gift, too, particularly as you can re-use it.

    £32.95, ocado.com

    5. Landmann Taurus 660

Landmann has an impressive selection of barbecues this year, including a Tennessee Smoker. But this one – a black, three-part enamelled drum grill with a thermometer – stands out for durability and practicality. Easily catering for 10 people, it also has a warming rack and detachable side table.

    £179, sainsburys.co.uk

    6. Dancook Fire Bowl

This Danish-designed fire bowl can be used as a barbecue, garden heater or even a stylish garden table, if you buy the lid that goes with it. Made from stainless steel, with an aluminium frame, it's built to last and can be used with wood or charcoal.

    £189.99, lakeland.co.uk

    7. Homebase New York Pedestal

Ideal for couples and small families, this pedestal barbecue is also handy for smaller spaces. It's easy to use and clean and the ash collector at the bottom works a treat. It's a good height, too, so no need for backache while you cook.

    £39.99, homebase.co.uk

    8. Blooma Nevada 3-Burner

This family-sized barbecue is easy to assemble, is powerful and has easy-to-use controls. It has a grill and griddle cooking surface, a warming rack and automatic ignition. If you treat the wooden frame every year, it should see you through balmy summer evenings for years to come.

    £199, diy.com

    9. Weber One Touch

This iconic and extremely popular charcoal barbecue has a built-in thermometer in the lid, a one-touch cleaning system and an exceptionally hard-wearing lid and bowl. Best of all, the attention to detail means you can grill, roast or bake to perfection.

    £199.99, lakeland.co.uk

    10. Landmann Picolino

The perfect barbecue for taking to the park with you along with your football and mat. It runs on charcoal, has a sealable lid for roasting, and has three thin legs, to keep grass scorch marks to a minimum.

    £45.50 debenhams.com

We have No 10. And my boss bought no 9 the other week for a huge barbecue we had in the local castle here - had to lug it back into his land rover - well, there was that and the gas fired one. We had 30 to feed.
