I was probably going on my numbers from years ago last time I did a proper comparison, there was a time when they were close but what I really mean is that the gross total per annum is a lot more than here, even in the condo I was paying more for electric per annum over there than I did anywhere I've lived here.

Now in the house we rent over there last month the bill was 5900 peso and we only have aircon in the bedroom at night, I get about 6 months of that and 6 months closer to 3000 peso and that's a lot more than I use here even with winter heating.

It’s her plan as she thinks it’s a good idea. I will build 1 for a start and see how we get on

Last month when I was in manila at her brother flat I saw his E-bill and he and his friends who share the flat had used 124kw unites and his bill was around 1250peso.
He doesn’t have an aircon but has 1 induction hob, 1 fridge, 1 42”LCD TV, 4 standing fans, sky cable, broadband, and 3 laptops.
And that was his bill he said in manila people steal electricity from other.

Mahusay! Hahahahaha... You wouldn't even think he's foreign, if you're just listening.

You have to remember that Meralco is a monopoly. Also a lot of Filipino politicians have shares in that company.

If some ruling/law is not in their favour, or some foreign group is thinking of entering the electric distribution sector, then they'll just pressure the politicians and it will be immediately dealt with.

Hence, why we are suffering from its unfair charges. And they can keep on changing the rates.

They even charge you for generation loss (brown-outs/black-outs) VAT (GST 10%), and miscellaneous fees when they should be carrying all that burden. WTF?

I`m not really sure how it works here to be honest..Pretty certain Meralco rates are higher than here in Bohol..No idea why.
Its not just you..I have heard it said many many times that the R.P has one of the most expensive power rates in the world..
I think its a bit of a myth really..
I really planned our nipa hut here with as much thought and research as possible to stay cool in a hot climate.. A high nipa roof vented at top with 1.5 meter eves to shade walls.. I run the A/C about 2 hours a week.
    In Manila I need the A/C 24/7..!!

    I've read about that too.

The main reason is because of MERALCO being a monopoly. All power-plants in the Philippines uses MERALCO grid. They're the ones who do the distribution.

Electricity rates vary if your place is residential or commercial.

After Yolanda we had no power for nearly a month as much of our power comes from Leyte..
My bill for that month was more than my average monthly bill!! Lol.
You need a sense of humour to live here..
    Still love it though!

Nah, opposite pare in general. But it can depend on the place. One example is...

In Ayala Alabang, Meralco charges and bleeds people there dry. But hey they're rich so I guess it makes things even.

Compare that to commercial Greenhills, and Greenhills is cheaper.

But there is a way to bypass that...

There are some Meralco employees who cut your bill in half, in exchange for giving them your 'token of appreciation.' =p

And Tondo, Manila is full of people who are very connected with MERALCO. People there don't pay for electricity. =p

Back in the day all the meters in Manila squatter areas were at ground level until Meralco got wise to the squatters bypassing them.... Makes me laugh now though when I see 300+meters 6 meters high perched up on a concrete post!!
The meter readers need a cherry picker to take readings! lol.
The Barangay cap in our sub div in Cavite hooks up all the street lights up direct to the grid before the meter..About every 6 months Meralco unhook em.. Next day....
Ahhh..Its more fun in the Philippines!
