That you ascribe America's foreign policy and Britain's support of it to the rise of Muslim fundamentalism is, I think, correct. But it's a bit too simplistic to blame the Taliban and 9/11 as being the cause. Remember that America armed and funded Bin Laden and she also armed and funded Saddam Hussein and encouraged him to go to war against Iran.

I believe the actual cause is far more fundamental than that and it is, quite simply, the US' totally blinkered support for Israel - to the exclusion of all others. For that one can thank the uber-rich, predominantly Jewish New York bankers and Hollywood film producers who are a very powerful lobby group. For the first forty-ish years following the creation of the state of Israel, Britain also unflinchingly supported Israel and she too ignored the plight of the displaced Arab population. But then Israel started to occupy the West Bank and Gaza and in so doing thousands of Palestinian Arabs lost their ancestral lands. They became the underdogs and bit by bit, slowly and surely Britain came to realise and appreciate their plight. But America remains single-minded in its approach, the Neo-Cons won't have it any other way.

America does well when its fighting conventional wars with set piece battles and carpet bombing which, to a large extent, explains why they did so badly in the Vietnam war. Britain, on the other hand, has great experience dealing with incursions and terrorism, Malaya and Northern Ireland being two recent examples and our "experts" are the SAS and SBS fro which there are no direct equivalents in the US military, the closest being US Rangers and the Navy Seals. Of our allies, only Australia has special forces who are trained to the same high degree as our own. With that in mind and remembering that Russia was at war with the Taliban for many years and had to admit defeat, America is totally out of its depth in Afghanistan and she has to pull-out because the body bag count is unacceptably high to the American peoples who have still remember Vietnam.

But even when we and the US do finally leave Afghan soil, that won't be the end of terrorism on our shores. There remains America's single-minded approach to the Palestinian Problem. Only if we totally divorce ourselves from US Middle Eastern foreign policy and make a very public show of that militarily, if necessary, do we stand any chance of ridding ourselves from the curse of Islamism and further atrocities on British soil. I say "if" rather than "when" quite deliberately because I don't foresee any prospect of that coming to pass.

The US support of Israel has more to do with using Israel as a proxy to keep local countries in check and keeping the balance of power as it is, rather than some collusion of Jews lobbying the US. They do of course lobby on behalf of Israel, but the US goes ahead with their massive support for purely selfish reasons.
