Japanese developers unveiled last week an electric car they said can travel more than 300 kilometers before its battery runs flat. Electric-vehicle specialist SIM-Drive, which hopes to take the car to market by 2013 but gave no projected cost, said its four-seat SIM-LEI has motors inside each wheel and a super-light frame, allowing for 333 kilometersof motoring on one charge.

Its designers say they hope the prototype, a joint project among 34 organizations including Mitsubishi Motors and engineering firm IHI, will be sold to car manufacturers for mass production.

Carmakers such as Nissan, which launched its all-electric Leaf last year with a 160-kilometer range, are gambling that electric cars with zero tailpipe emissions will catch on and, some time in the future, start to drive traditional petrol-guzzlers off the road. But electric cars still face key hurdles like costly batteries and the lack of conveniently located recharging points, which limits their operating radius

Now that sounds promising. Wonder how much it will cost to buy.
Nissan Leaf is about £25k but takes 10 hours to charge for 100 mile run. May suit some people.

I couldn't justify in my mind, the expense in electricity in recharging the darn thing all the time.
I am sure that whatever one saves in personal carbon emissions, is far outweighed by actually producing the lecky necessary to recharge thousands of the silly innovations.
So, no vote of confidence from me....

Besides if it doesn't go va-va-voooooommmmmmm it ain't a real car..........

Aromulus, you could always go really green and install solar panels for charrging the electric car. Then you sell the unused generated electricity back to the grid. In principle you would be getting paid to drive around in your electric car. :like:

Not much to do about the missing va-va-voom. Sorry.

If you have enough electrical energy to spare, you could always run a sound generator and amplifier!

Actually, I've just thought of another idea ... do you remember, as a kid, using clothes pegs and pieces of cardboard to give your bike that 'special' sound?

Oh Yeah! I do remember that now. Ha ha.
Thanks for jogging my memory on that. Funny little things of life.
