Why do they say a player misses a penalty when the goalkeeper saves it?

    A missed opportunity?

Haha good point . I don't get why they say "he hit the target" when no goal has been scored , but the shot was merely "on target " . To me hit the target would mean they scored a goal .

No the reports are Messi misses a penalty, but in act had the goalkeeper not been in the way it would of gone in.
A miss is something that would be outside the boundaries of the goal.
The goalkeeper made a great save is correct.

Well yes. There is a fine line there between the two. However when it comes to a penalty if you do not score, whether it is saved or not you have missed that opportunity to score.

Why do we call it offside? Dunno. Why do we say goal kick? Do we kick the goal? It’s all jargon to some degree that has worked its way into both common language and official football language.

Does a sweeper get his brush out for the game? :D

    Interesting questions though.
