Holiday Visa nightmare

I got caught in the quagmire of EU Schengen regulations.

We were looking forward to flying to Italy for a long time, and yesterday, early morning, we were turned back from Jet2 at Manchester Airport, because the wording on my wife's Permanent Residence card did not satisfy the various people involved.

So, we drove back home, in a very sombre mood.
As soon as we arrived, I got on the internet and also phoned around.
After quite a long time of frustrating searches, I got in touch with VFS.

The goalposts have been moved, slightly.
For the past year or so, my wife needs a Schengen Visa to visit Europe, but alas, she is allowed to come back on her own from anywhere in the world...

I tried to get an early appointment for going to VFS in Manchester to apply for said Schengen, after postponing holidays with the respective employers, but to no avail, as no slots were available in time for provisional departure date... And also demanded fully paid travel ticket as proof, amongst other things.

The Airfare with Jet2 is non refundable. The travel insurance I took does state to check Visas before leaving.........

    My fault entirely.

Yes, I have noticed this. The BRP that we get is different to the BRP that enables travel in the Schengen area. The should have the words along the lines of "Wife of an EU Citizen" rather than British citizen.

I do know people who have travelled round Europe on the UK BRP though. I think it's a case of whether or not you get away with it.

Well, we have flown there before, and drove there on a couple of other times without any problems.

On this sad occasion, Jet2 employees made the ill thought decision to stop us from traveling, on behalf of the Italian immigration service.
