My wife wants us to obtain health insurance for her parents in case they ever get ill.

They are in their 50s and live in Bohol. Currently in good health.

    They don’t have Phil health.

    Any suggestions please?

Any reason not to have Philhealth. Wife and I have got Philhealth. Price went up this year, 3k a year or thereabouts. Private Health insurance cost a lot.

They’ve just never had Philhealth. What does Philhealth cover?

Thanks Jim. Funnily enough, my wife had Philhealth and when we had a motorbike accident in PH that landed us both in hospital it reduced the bill for her.

I think the concern is what if something more serious happened to her parents? Is there a more comprehensive option?

I think you can pay for a comprehensive policy with PhilHealth. Have a look at Z Benefits on PhilHealth.

Everyone has Phil Health now under the Universal Health care act as one of our members Mattecube brought to the attention of the forum the other day.

See the FAQ page of this site Department of Health website (doh.gov.ph)

Talking through the events of my wife's family recent bereavement the facts in the boys case are he was unemployed never paid into Philhealth, on his admission into hospital the family applied for Philhealth to kick in and so it did, I think this is a basic level and you can supplement the care level by private contributions.

That's how it appears to work!

Sorry for your wife's family's loss, Yes you can pay for extra cover, don't know what level that is. I had Dengue fever last year and was in hospital for treatment 48 hours, had a private room with 32 inch TV, aircon and CR.
Total hospital bill 21k I had to pay 11k plus the drugs. PhilHealth paid about 50% ish. I had to show the security guard my receipt before he would let me out.

Been a few horror stories in the newspapers in the UK over the years about brits trapped in pinoy hospitals having run up decent bills and not being allowed out till they had payed in full.

    Thanks!
Interestingly the boys family ( I am getting all this third hand) have been told the hospital won't release the body till Phillhealth have paid the invoice (takes about 2 weeks) and then the body is released to a crematorium only to be cremated no other choice at this point the family can collect his ashes.
    Does this sound about right?

We had to show the armed security guard the fully paid receipt for the consultant and the hospital covering the costs of delivering my daughter in July 2008, it was something like 60,000 to 80,000 peso, I was running around hitting ATMs sticking in one International Credit card after another as they refused to accept a credit card payment.

Not at all, my hospital bill was settled in an hour of me being discharged minus Philhealths cost. Might differ from other hospitals! In other words, the hospital deducted Philhealths contribution there and then.
Or they cremating bodies because of the pandemic?
