Hello everyone, I’ve recently received my fiancee visa and now trying to prepare for the wedding! I would like to ask a few questions about giving notice of marriage. In the local city council website, they ask for my proof of address, I wonder what others have provided if they’ve only been in the UK for at least a week? And is cenomar and confirmed booking of venue required?

Will they give me some sort of a letter or certificate to say we have given notice and when our wedding ceremony will be? We would like to use this as a an evidence for inviting my parents over to the UK to attend our wedding.

    Thanks in advance!

You will need to give notice at a designated registry office...as your a foreign national. This may well not be your nearest office. Go online and search for your correct one. There you will both be interviewed..separately and together. Allow an hour for this.

The council has asked my partner to write a letter to confirm that I live in his address and that's what we used as proof of address. Not sure what your council would suggest, better to give them a ring.

Thanks @bigmac you’ve reminded me also about the interview, I forgot about that. What sort of questions do they ask?

all sorts of stuff about your husband -to-be--his family--birthdays--his job--anything. they need to see its not an arranged marriage or a sham wedding.

Definitely something to prepare for then, its making me nervous  after the interview will they give us a letter right away to say it’s approved or will we wait for a few weeks for that? Trying to work the time we need.

your giving 21 days notice of intended marriage. if the registrar isnt satisfied they wont proceed with your notice. dont worry--its just a formality--but intended to filter out the shams and fakes. some of those have probably never met--so wont know anything about each other.

I had my fiancée added to electricity and water bills. The registry office were happy to accept the latest bills in joint names.

Thanks again @bigmac it makes sense for them too look out for sham marriages. Just nervous as officers can be intimidating sometimes and my fiancee keeps forgetting my birthday! :)

They accepted membership from debenhams, tesco and morrisons.

I wasnt interviewed at all - just asked question about my name, date of birth and passport and visa details (everything i had copies of). So it depends on the registrar
