I have previously always flown on Business and via Abu Dhabi. I know there are some routes via Singapore and some Direct can anyone advise as best alternative - time, comfort, cost than routing via UAE?

Direct to Manila I believe the only option is Philippines airline. Never used their biz class so can't comment on it. Economy on the old airbus 340 was ok although used to pay extra for exit row seats by doors which gave a bit more leg space.

I did most of my trips with Qatar in economy and normally had short stop in Qatar (about 2 hours) so not that much longer flight. Didn't miss any connections on my flights but mate of mine was on plane which left London late and missed the onward connection so had 24 hours in Doha at Qatar's expense and also got I think 600 euro compensation so did ok out of it.

Got deals with Turkish and Saudia (no alcohol but I wanted lie flat seats so didn't care) in biz class in the past which were cheap but think that was timing and fact that restrictions on taking laptops on board were in place. Connections were longer with Saudia. Think bit longer with Turkish compared to Qatar.

Overall my preference would be Qatar but their biz class product is not cheap.

Flying back with wife and kids on last flight had to turn down biz class upgrade as would only have covered me. Sad day as probably last time I would have opportunity to do biz class on Qatar.

Experience with Qatar in economy has been interesting as been on a number of economy class flights with them were on certain legs not very full and managed to get 3 or 4 seats row to myself which allows lie down across the seats. Only problem is working out were those flights are. Most other airlines are full regardless these days.

I have flown over many times and always in economy class. When I was single, I always wanted to save money to use on scuba diving and when the kids arrived there was never any thought about using business class.
The best journey was with the wife/kids because we stopped over in Hong Kong and had a good sleep there (the kids were too young to remember anything). Cathay Pacific was good also, and I bought a camera lens in Mong Kok. (HK).
I would do the HK again.

Stopping off in Bangkok was also good as Thai food is wonderful and the missus bought lots of shoes too.
