Energy is nationally strategic you can't fight a war without power stations and power generation, it should never have been privatised, while it was a nationalised industry decisions were strategic, building nuclear and other forms of generation were planned long in advance the rationale was long term planning for the future planning for capacity. Thatcher changed all that turning an essential resource into a profit centre, the profits were at the expense of planning for a national 'essential' resource and we ended up with the cheapest generation via gas because that maximised profits for the rich but none of that provided energy security. Look at France they have huge nuclear resources, so are they an example for us, well yes and no because they still have far less energy than they need to replace oil and gas in totality but if we had their nuclear capacity combined with our renewables we would be in a great position now, but we still could not forego oil not yet but we would be closer to that goal. I worked for the South of Scotland Electricity Board, the SSEB, now Scottish Power, for 5 years 40 odd years ago, I'm already collecting a small pension from them it was a great company with well paid jobs and it did a great job planning power generation not just for Scotland but for the whole of the UK, we were a net exporter of energy even back 40 years ago. Nationalise the whole generation and supply industry again but be bloody careful not to put the commercial money men idiots in charge of it again once it is nationalised.
