I just checked my BT bill, including VAT with the Friends and Family International package I pay 11.7 p a minute to call the Philippines, no additional VAT, I'd have to check but I don't think mobiles are any more expensive.

Howerd have you looked at plain old BT recently?

P.S. The friends and family thing costs £1.20 a month, so the real cost depends on how much you use it.

That is a pretty good price to call the Philippines from a mainstream land-line provider.

I don't tend to look at call charges from the mainstream providers oss, because they are always more expensive than the cheapest out there. And I don't like BT or TalkTalk as they have Call Centres in India. I have suffered at the hands of a BT call centre worker in India who ordered a new landline in my name. I kicked au a real stink with BT, who paid me around £300 in the end as compensation.

Earlier this year, TalkTalk had a 'data leak' - customers data stolen by the company they outsource to India. Chances are when I change provider next year, I will go to Plusnet, which is owned by BT and only has UK call centres. Their call centre staff are excellent and they always win the best customer service awards.

One thing that PlusNet don't have is a smartphone app that you can use from overseas to call back to the UK, making use of the free calls package on your land-line. But therre are other standalone apps that allow this for as little as 0.1p/min to UK landlines and 0.4p/min to UK mobiles.

THE SOLUTION FOR TALKTALK CUSTOMERS BELOW NO LONGER WORKS

Ok, it is confirmed, there is now a way of calling Philippine land-lines and mobiles from a TalkTalk land-line for free. TalkTalk only give you access to one 0845 number for free in the call packages (no free access to 0870 numbers)

So, here is the solution to call Philippines land-lines and mobiles by dialling an 0845 number. It is a little complex...

SET UP YOUR TALKTALK FAMILY CIRCLE WITH 0845 381 5190 NUMBER FIRST! AND I SUGGEST LEAVING IT A COUPLE OF HOURS BEFORE DOING A TEST CALL AS WELL.

YOU WILL ALSO HAVE TO REGISTER WITH UK03.CO.UK AS DESCRIBED IN THE FIRST POST ON THIS THREAD.

Now program your TalkTalk phone with the following dialling string...

    08453815190PP08702481300#

    By way of explanation...

First, it dials the 0845 number then pauses (you have to program in the 2 pause symbols) The 0845 number then gives free access to the 0870 number, which gives you the free calls to Philippines land-lines/mobiles.

When you want to make a call, select the memory on your phone to dial the string, wait for all the prompts to end and then enter the number you wish to call, followed by #. Don't worry about the message which says you will be charged 1p/min for the call, cos you won't get charged as long as you have the 0845 number programmed into your TalkTalk calling circle.

I have verified that this solution works from a TalkTalk land-line. It should also work with other telecom providers that provide free calls to 0845 numbers. You can also use it to call UK land-lines and mobiles and earn cash-back at the same time.
