I had a wonderful bit of news last night.

My wife started work one year ago in a hotel as a housekeeper.
She has been working very hard and has received lots of certificates for doing well at her job, which understandably has made her feel very proud.

She told me last night that she has started building a house on her island, on land given to her by her grandfather who lives very close to her parents.

We won't be going over for quite a while but we will go over when the house progresses.
Lots of her family are very good builders.
She wants a terrace at the top where we can relax and eat with a little breeze, as it can be very hot there.

We have no plans to migrate there right now but will go over for holidays and see what happens as our kids grow up.

I have always known that my wife wants her own house over there, she has shown great initiative to get things moving.

My wife is exactly the same, she was going to start the building in the summer, but plans change and it has been put on hold.
Good luck with the build. Look forward to seeing pics when it’s finished.

I would feel great to have a home elsewhere on the planet, a home that was owned, good on her, I know you don't really plan to retire there Mike but it's a bit of extra security for your wife and for your kids.

    That's right, Jim.
When it is built, we will go over for holidays.
It would be a nice feeling to travel to our house over there.

She wants a three storey building with a Sari-sari store on the ground floor.
I don't know if it will be two or three but she knows what she is doing.
    Filipina wives are very resourceful.

It is so hot on her island though. I hope the terrace will be ready in a couple of years so we can catch any breeze that is available.
The last two times we have been there, the kids were rushed by boat to the hospital on the mainland because of heat exhaustion
Life is very slow on her island and everything revolves around fishing.
There is no internet and the telephone signal is "iffy".

Her parents now have solar panels for their lights and Chel wants the same also, as there is no mains supply - people sometimes use generators or even share the output.
She said she wants air conditioning but that will draw too much current.

A punkah wallah would be the ideal solution, but I never saw this type of worker in the Philippines :)

She is paying for everything herself for the beginning phase but I will contribute as time goes on.
