Tried again on youtube, it will play for a few seconds then stop start. Netflix flawless.

Odd I would not expect it to partially work, that sounds like bandwidth but all 4K playback only needs about 10 - 15 Mbit or occasionally even less if the stream is compressed.

The peak we get on PLDT is about 5Mbit, if you don't mind me asking how much do you pay for the PLDT fibre ?

25mbps unlimited (upgraded to 30 by PLDT) is P1850 pm.

Is that over and above the standard PLDT charges for a land line?

    That figure includes a landline.

The crap we get is 1849 peso a month, she added some garbage that we have been paying for about 8 years, cheap crap tablets that would not cost £30 in the UK and which died within months and which we have paid a monthly premium for forever.

I can't change it because it is in her name and I can't order anything new for the same reason.

    I pay 1899 for 30 Mbps.

Just been looking at TVs again today. There are some tv’s available now with stunning picture quality. Trouble is they cost a lot of money. I am trying to restrain my wife (it will be her choice in the end as it will be her money that pays for it).

She was homing in on a 65” Samsung UHD 4K TV. PQI of 2000. I am not sure if our wall will hold the weight! :D

Incidentally. Anybody seen this new Portal technology?

It’s like your relatives (or your gf / fiancee) in the Philippines are in the same room... We saw it today and marvelled at how things change.

Later. I have found out that the local broadband in the area won’t be enough for 4K streaming. Failed.:mad:

No problem with my 4k Toshiba in North Wales. I doubt I will succumb to her indoors temptation to waste money by purchasing another TV.
We still have my old 28" Bush CRT and 32" Samsung flat screen to get rid of.

I think it’s going to be a no from me too. I live in a new build estate and they didn’t install fibre. So will have to sit down and explain to her indoors why it wouldn’t work as things stand.

You don't need Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) just Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC).

What kind of speeds can you get in your area?

Can't believe builders can be that stupid these days to not install full FTTP, they should at least have made provision for conduits so that a cable can be drawn through at a later date, a lad in the office just bought a house and it had all kinds of home automation built in along with facilities for all kinds of different providers for telecoms and entertainment.

You only need about 15Mbit for 4k.

I have just been talking to Sky. The answer is that fibre hasn’t been layed in our area. We are in the countryside.

But I agree, how stupid not to install it while they were building the site. :D

So me and the Mrs have had the conversation and it wasn’t easy, but she knows now that there is no point if we can’t get “super fast broadband” via fibre.

Somewhere between 6 and 8 mbps...

I bought the kids that TCL 4k set because I knew that even though we could not get 4k streamed the FHD stream on Netflix would still look amazing and it does.

6 to 8 Mbit is pretty restrictive nowadays, your real problem is that BT hasn't got the infrastructure where you are, that's the whole thing about there still being large areas of the country without access to high speed communications.

Yes that might help. Funnily enough we were looking at that in the IOM at one point as the provider Blue Wave (owned by my next door neighbour as it happens) had set such a service up there. It worked very well and my employer used that very same facility so I know it worked well. What I didn’t know was that someone is doing the same thing here in the U.K.

The original owner died at a young age, just the other side of the wall to us. Strange but true.

Certainly is restrictive. But there are just green fields and cows around us, pretty much, so they didn’t bother...

People used to do the satellite thing in Spain, and share it with neighbours.

I think we have finally taken the decision to go down that route.
