Is it impossible to be an environmentalist and still travel by plane?

People who care about animals are still allowed to enjoy a steak.

There are some things, such as global travel, which are unavoidable and vitally important in today's world. Other things, such as the over use of plastic and cleaner industrial processes can still be addressed.

30,000? Where pray did you pluck that number from? Sounds a bit imprecise to me, a guestimate. And what is a "pollution-related disease" - can you provide some examples?

Extreme ignorance, you would not exist without technology, Malthusian catastrophe would have killed you and yours and me and mine long ago if it had not been for the technological revolution in farming and the biological revolution of antibiotics.

We live in a world that is fundamentally technological and that same technology is the root cause of our problems, there is no way back we won't solve our problems by retreating from a technological world at least not without horrendous casualties.

The numbers say that we could achieve technological solutions to our immediate problems regards energy supply however it would be with some restriction to the largesse we have enjoyed so far, the future technological world that solves these problems would be a far preferable world to live in than the selfish wasteful place we live in today.

If you want the status quo then prepare for the premature death of you and yours and your friends, me and mine will join you in that fate as will a significant part of the rest of the populace.

Any so called committed "environmentalist" knows full well that by flying in a wide bodied aircraft he/she is contributing and supporting the huge demand required by the airline industry to survive..
Their "commitment" fails dismally when they make that choice IMO.
I know that it`s a tough pill to swallow for you global warming is mankind`s fault characters but there you go!
    It`s true.
Me? My carbon emission footprint is absolutely minuscule, so I can take the moral high ground for once!! Ha!

I know this will incense members here, but I think that Climate Change is a load of codswallop. It is an unfair way that governments can get more taxes from people - you may ask why I feel like that, and I will draw your attention to Tall Blokes Talkshop - worth reading through the blog - the whole debate on Climate Change is flawed - but they don't want you to know that do they? Now why would they not want you to know that?

Reducing air pollution though is positive.

    Earth warming is flawed.

Climate change and earth warming are not the same. I read the first page of your link and it attacks Governments responses to it not the actual science. The whole, I don't like taxes therefore I won;t accept climate change is at best blinkered. I personally think we should be looking at the whole environment included plastic lakes in the ocean. This is not a single strand issue.

So do you want to bet the future of your children and grandchildren and everyone else, that self centred climate sceptics are right and the entire scientific community is wrong.

And let's for a minute suppose the climate sceptics are right and end up getting their way, they basically want you to live in a dirty polluted s**thouse, we are there already and under their vision it will only get worse.

What's easier to explain that the entire scientific community is conspiring to send a fraudulent message to the world or that what they are saying is the result of decades of hard work and observation and that they are being true to the discipline they belong to.

Occam's Razor that should be the end of it but most of you prefer complex devious explanations for everything.

See this, pretty isn't it, all of it is pollution.

Coming into Manila this is what it really looks like no alterations to the image.

This is what it looks like after I have done my best to adjust it, didn't have to do that as often 10 years ago, sometimes it was clear.

And here is a normal day in Manila
    [IMG]

Most cities around the world look like this now and I would have said this was a good day for Manila
    [IMG]

We are all breathing this in because we all want to have a car and we all want aircon or central heating and three televisions in the house.

Industry pollutes, all industry, all of it obeys the second law of thermodynamics and all of it requires energy, there is no industry on the planet that does not require the input of energy, with a bit of effort we could make stuff last longer making the production process more efficient, and we could choose alternative sources of energy that didn't rely on hydrocarbons.

    The "entire scientific community"?
Really..You mean 100% of the worlds scientific community or just 100% of the worlds scientific community being paid to say what they are paid to think?
    Please..Can we get real.

Does not incense me one iota.
Just about every thing you said rings true about human nature and makes perfect sense to me.

And there you go again, conspiracy nutter number one.

For you it is easier to believe in a conspiracy than to actually take the time to rationally evaluate anything.

I just wonder how much **** goes out the back of the black hole you were riding in,in that picture?
I also wonder how much your fare contributed to it? Interesting to know the real facts but they do not exist unless there is a taxable penalty involved.
