    hi guys,

My name is Liam and I am half Filipino and half Scottish. I’m Filipino on my dads side but he lives in Italy and I haven’t had any contact with him since I was 4.

So I have grew up with white friends and family and am basically white but I often wonder what Filipino people are like andhave lots of questions regarding myself. I am 31 and only just realised that my lack of facial hair is nothing to do with being manly, it’s a Filipino thing.

I am 5’5” which is below average for Scotland. Most girls go for taller men with beards so I’m not creme de la creme here. Would that be an average height in the Philippines ?

Are there any Filipinos in Scotland I can chat to to learn more about the part of me which has always been a mystery?

I have attached a picture so you can put a face to the name.

    Hi Liam.

    Welcome to the forum.

Your story touched me, as I have a half-Filipino son now aged 25, and one aged 3 years.

It would have broken my heart not being able to be part of their whole lives.

Have you thought of having a holiday in the Philippines ? It's an amazing place... in a crazy sort of way, and the people are wonderful and welcoming, whatever your lineage. :)

Oh, and yes...5 foot 5 inches would be around the average for a Filipino guy...and lucky them, not needing to shave much, I say. :D

Any questions... fire away. I've been visiting and living in the Philippines for almost 30 years now (and retired there now).

Hi Liam , welcome to the forum.

That’s an interesting introduction, so thanks for sharing that . Do you have any family at all who are still in the Philippines ?

    Thanks for the welcome!

I have thought about it but I imagine it would be expensive, I have 3 kids so you can imagine how much that costs! Hopefully one day though I can go and experience it.

hi--welcome to the forum. i dont know why youre concerned about your facial hair--your beard looks ok...but in my experience--very few women like blokes with beards.

Beards are fashionable these days apparently and they do help protect from the weather in Glasgow ;)

I have had a beard for most of my life and yes most women don't like them :)

All the female Filipinas in my life (wife, mother in law, tita etc) hate my beard. They say I look like Abu Sayyaf. I receive repeated threats that they will spike my drinks and chop it off. However, other (non Asian) women seem to appreciate it.

I refuse to shave it off as I hate to think how much sleep time I lost over the years by shaving each morning. Without my bum fuzz, I get questioning stares if I so much as buy a Lottery ticket, so it's here for the foreseeable future.

Liam in my dads generation most Scots were of smaller stature, I'm 5' 10" a wee bit taller than my dad who was 5' 7", one thing my dad always used to say was that tall people die young because their heart has to pump harder than the shorties :) he was a Pharmacist with a good knowledge of medicine and science but the tale was probably apocryphal :)

My Filipino son is 13 years old and is currently about 5' 7" his Filipino grandfather was 6' 4" as were his two Filipino great uncles, my daughter is more likely to be small she is 10 years old and still under 5' all the girls in my family have tended to be small.

It is to some extent genetic but I think a large part of the small stature in the Phils is due to calorie restriction in teenage years due to the general poverty, I do see a lot of taller Filipinos these days.

All I can say is you should try to pay a visit to the Philippines, it is as Graham says an amazing place in a crazy kind of way and the thing that most appealed to me about the place is the warmth and kindness of the Philippine people, I've also said on here before that in some very odd ways there is something about the people and the close knit families that reminds me of my own childhood in Scotland.

I agree with Graham your story is touching it is sad that your dad didn't play a proper part in your growing up.

When I first met Ana I switched to a goatee as a compromise but I do resent all that shaving every morning two minutes of pointless activity every day :D

On the subject of average height for Filipino guys, I find it quite strange that the national sport is basketball, a sport that I would imagine gives a great advantage to tall people. Having said that, I guess if both teams are Filipino teams it averages out. Tough going in international competitions though.

Even if you're not religious, try going to a Filipino church. There should be some in Scotland.

Mingle with them and then you'll find out.

That or go to a local basketball court. Chances are you'll encounter a Filipino or so.
