I have been thinking what makes it 'easier' to have your name the same as your spouse's in your passport. Isn't marriage certificate sufficient anymore? Reason I am asking, I just renewed my Ph passport last year, wasn't allowed to change into married name in the embassy as documents were incomplete (PSA), and it wouldn't be cost-effective if I have it changed straight away. I am due to apply my ILR early 2020. Will anyone advice me to have it changed before then or wait until I apply for British passport? Thanks in advance!
You are better off to wait after you have taken your oath with Citizenship. After the oath you will be given your certificate, so when you apply for your British passport you can then start using your spouse surname. You only need to submit your citizenship certificate with your marriage certificate together with your application. But you still can't avoid the demand of Philippine embassy to have the PSA done so it will match your British passport if you intend to have dual nationality. I had issues with this recently when I had to renew my British passport as the name is different from my expired Philippine passport although the old Philippine passport has been cancelled. They asked if I have dual nationality as they cannot issue a new British passport if I have an existing passport with other nationality in a different name. So I was asked to prove that I no longer have the Philippine passport under a different name. So I went to Philippine embassy to have the formal letter that I am no longer eligible to have Philippine passport. Please see attached documents for your info. PS. No need for a deedpoll as mine is different as I had to change my name for some issues.
Thank you @AM2018 . Sorry to hear you have to go through the inconveniences at the Ph embassy. So I take it you will be required to submit your old Philippines passport when renewing your British passport?
Yes! they asked for my Philippine passport and this is how they based my case, as my surname is still under my single status in my Philippine passport and I did not have this PSA which they require at the Philippine embassy nowadays. But my Philippine passport was expired many years ago and I told the Philippine embassy staff that I have no intention of having a dual nationality as I have no plan to go back to the Philippines because all my family are here. So the Philippine embassy issued that letter which satisfy the Home Office so they renew my British passport under my present name.
If you intend to have dual nationality, after you take an oath to become British citizen, you will need to take an oath at the Philippine embassy too. In order to secure your Philippine citizenship.
Do you mind telling me how much you have to pay to request that document in the embassy to prove you previous passport had been cancelled?
It shows in the documents attached its only £23 its quite recent so I am sure they haven't put up the price yet.
We are in a similar position as yourself and also had issues with our PSA document at the embassy in London and needed it renewing last year to travel home we had to renew in her maiden name. We are going to the USA at christmas so we are going to change my wifes passport to her married name now we have the right coloured PSA document even though my wifes current passport has 9 years to go! Be easier I think
