Wikileaks founder Julian Assange should be allowed to walk free and be compensated for his "deprivation of liberty", a UN legal panel has found.

Mr Assange, 44, - who faces extradition to Sweden over a rape claim, which he denies - claimed asylum in London's Ecuadorean embassy in 2012.

He has been arbitrarily detained since his arrest in 2010, the panel said.
The UK Foreign Office said the report "changes nothing" and it will "formally contest the working group's opinion".

Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond said the panel's opinion was "ridiculous" and Mr Assange was a "fugitive from justice". He said Mr Assange can come out "any time he chooses" but will still have to face justice in Sweden.

The Met Police said it will make "every effort" to arrest Mr Assange should he leave the embassy.

The government says the panel's ruling is not legally binding in the UK and a European Arrest Warrant remains in place - meaning the UK continues to have a legal obligation to extradite Mr Assange.........

    Whats so hard to understand?

Mr Assange has not been formally charged with any offence. Sweden has requested his extradition so he may be questioned.

The UK is merely honouring it's international obligations.

If Sweden then decide to hand him over to the Americans, that's their problem, not ours.

Nothing complicated, but as usual, its a giant conspiracy. The conspiracy theorists will be wetting themselves with joy.

Another example of how 'Britain' doesn't care what the rest of the world bar Uncle Sam thinks, and usually the Saudis too. It doesn't like European law, the Human Rights act, it doesn't like the UN legal panel...it resents poorly paid workers from Europe and those claiming any benefits.

Basically anything which gets in the way of their agenda - pleasing the privileged and America - is vilified and shot down.

There is nothing complicated about this, I agree. UK won't go against America.
