That is very true. As always everything in moderation, this is why diets generally don't work. As long as you eat healthy, sensible food with the odd treat and obviously burn more calories than you take in you are bound to lose weight. It obviously does get harder the older we get because generally our metabolic rate slows

I am cross with myself because I don't actually like plastic Americsn pizza! I only ate some out of politeness! (I did decline the proffered Coke!)

    I don't have any problem sticking to the 1200 calories a day - I don't feel hungry.

You seem to be doing really well, don't beat yourself up about the odd deviation, its not easy losing weight as you are getting older, most of us here can vouch for that.

I am Learning to Love the Rowing Machine.

I like the cross trainer but I hate the running machine and the stationary bicycle - I would rather run out of doors and I would much rather be on my nice forty year old Mercian tourer and go for a real ride - the cadence on the stationary bike is all wrong.

The rowing machine though was clearly designed and made by people who really do row, for people who really do row, and it shows. You can keep trying to improve your technique, and the results are shown for each stroke. Wonderful!

I'm 5ft 7 inches and weigh 15 stone 3 lbs. I've put on a stone since may 2015. I'm working hard at reducing the weight. Basically I need to eat less and move more. Had an mot at the Quacks and my blood pressure is 'good' but I can't remember what she said but my cholesterol was 4.5 so even though I'm well over weight at the moment my inner body is okish. I appreciate thats not the way to look at it so will continue trying to reduce. I don't smoke and drink rarely probably 2 pints per month! I live on the Mumbles sea front so NO excuse at all really apart from self motivation!

I just read this topic. I know it is old, but I will add something because maybe not everyone know it.
Firstly not all carbohydrates are bad. Carbohydrates are giving you the strength tor exercises. Of course if they are in good amounts, because too much of everything is always worse than not enough. There's lots of good carbohydrates like for example rice, brown rice, wholegrain bread or Rye bread. The bad ones which are not good is sugar and everything what contains sugar. Sugar is really bad because sugar is addictive. Lots of people are addicted to sugar and they don't even realise it because sugar is almost everywhere. Food producers are adding sugar to everything to boost their sales.
And problem with sugar is because to make your body to digestive sugar, your body needs to produce insulin. And insulin convert all your body and digestive system to make everything what you eat into body fat storing mode as long as insulin is in your blood. This is because sugar produce lots of energy so your body can draw all the energy they need from sugar. That's why there's always lots of sugar in energy drinks, because sugar is their main ingredient. There is lots of more ingredients of course, but that's just an additions. Take red bull can next time when you see it and read the ingredients label. :)

And secondly the fat. Fat in your diet is very important too. Of course in the good amounts too. Most healthy sources of fat are almonds, pumpkin seeds, walnuts, all nuts in general, olive oil, coconut oil, peanut butter and lots of others. The bad fat is saturated fat and this one is mostly in all products came from animals. I don't eat meat so I don't know much about it. :)
But like I said fat is very important and your body need fat. From fat your body produce testosterone and testosterone is a hormone responsible for good shape of your body and everything what is "manly". So cutting out fat completely is not good. It will make you only a problems. Starting from problems in bed and finishing on baldness on top of your head. :)

And thirdly I don't tell you exact numbers because everyone is different, but cutting calories too much is not good too. This is exactly what is a problem with all crash diets. Your body is a very very smart device. It can really surprise you how well and quick it adapt to all extreme situations. If you cut too much of the calories from your diet your body will think that you are starving. Something really bad happen. Some natural disaster or else. And your body will switch on some life and food saving mode. Working in a really really energy saving mode and try to save as much of the food you eat as fat because you never know when the disaster will finish. And try to digestive as energy a body parts that are not really needed for life like for example your muscles. And when you finish your crash diet and you start to eat normally your body will be still in energy saving mode and it will last quite a lot of pounds of new body fat until it come back to normal. That's where the famous yo yo effect came from.

All in all your diet should include 15% of protein, 55% of carbohydrates and 30% of fat. Of course if you count all amount in calories not in weight of the food. With numerous it will be different for everyone because everyone have different activities and need different number of calories, but of course main thing is to eat healthy.

And to be honest it's quite easy. It's not black magic or anything. It's like 70% of your success is a diet plan, and all the rest is for the exercises on the gym.

You don't even need a diet plan as far as you will be eating healthy. Just eat as a pig and work like a horse on the gym. And that's it. You will say bye bye for your belly sooner than you think. ;)
But you will need lots of lots of practice to resist working like a horse on the gym so for a new starters it is better to control your diet first to gain your stamina.

I hate fat, fat from mammals makes me vomit. I eat too many spuds and drink too many beers, hence a beer belly:D

I don't eat any biscuits, cakes or chocolate. I don't go to the gym, have to look after my knees:like:. I'm still working, up and down ladders all day, so that's the only exercise I get.

Be careful with that. I decided to lose some weight myself and my girlfriend wasn't happy about it. She was complain that I will be too thin. I told her that my goal is not to be thin, but make my body look good and to have a six-pack. That made her change her mind. Right now she is saying that if I really done it she will not let me to go outside the house when we will be in the Philippines because there will be always swarm of girls around me because I will be looking too good. :p

What about cheese and butter on top of your spuds? This is fat from the mammals. :p

I'm a bit of a latecomer to this conversation, but that's hardly surprising as a walk round the supermarket has me mopping my brow.

My weight problem didn't exist when I was 30 years old. Indeed, I was nicknamed 'the body' - 11 stone 2lb of bone and muscle, due to me cycling 25 miles at 20mph a couple of times a week plus six hours of badminton against players better than I.

But that was 23 years ago, and I've put on what works out to be half a stone a year since then, which the quicker witted of you will have calculated makes me twice the weight I was.

I'm now just the right side of 150kg, smoke 30 a day and take very little exercise. There has always been something far more important than taking care of myself for me to do - building businesses, getting Melody over and getting her residency, as well as regular 15-18 hour days throughout summer. I have become a convenience eater, a couch potato and a fridge grazer. The longest I walk is for about one minute, from the car to the door of the lift up to our apartment.

But now might just be a good time to get stuck into becoming a little more energetic before it impacts severely on my health. Nothing is wrong so far, but I imagine that is more due to good genes than good management.

Winter is on its way in Spain, and walking around the block is going to be my first challenge. (It's 2.7km around 'the block', all uphill or down). We live in a very nice block of apartments and there are four floors plus the garage underneath, so the stairs from bottom to top is also a target.

Of course I could go to a gym, but bashing away at weights has been part of the problem that has made me so heavy (it isn't ALL fat). I have concentrated too much on the weights and not enough on the cardio. For now, it would be a waste of money and it seems ridiculous to drive 10km to a gym when all the exercise I need at this stage is outside my front door.

It's a long road that I need to travel, which will begin with the first step. I was going to suggest that Tuesday the 1st of November would be my start date, but I think tomorrow morning might be better. I'm forever making wisecracks on this forum, but I think I need to begin to take things seriously regarding my health.

I'll keep you posted. Good luck to you all with your own battles.

Very good decision Chris. Beginnings are always hardest, but it is as well most important to start doing something to make things change. Just be strong and don't resign from your plan. Remember your 150 kilo was gathering very long time so now it not disappear in one week or month. ;)

I started my journey 2 years ago without any information what I should do and how. Just 25 - 30 min on the gym 3 - 4 days a week without cardio and trying to eat what I was guessing is healthy. And even if I know now that I done lots of wrong things, even this was giving me a good effect. when I started I had 95 kg. I lost 20 kilos in these 2 years. Including that when I was going to visit my girl in Philippines I wasn't limited my eating in there. I treat it like vacation from losing weight and I was eating without any limits. And after every visit I was coming back with 2 - 3 kg extra. But to be honest they was going down quite quickly. In this 2 years I visited Philippines 4 times.

But in May I decided I shouldn't be walking blindfolded any more. I should know what I am doing not just guessing. I subscribed to some plans and I have dietitian who is setting me a diet plans everyday and the couch who setting up a exercise plans too. They cooperate and share information together. And now I know how many things I was doing wrong.

I started in May and my cardio was treadmill run with speed 8 km/h 10 min on the start and 20 min on the end. And i was thinking that I'm going to die there. :p
But every week was better and better. Right now I'm running 45 - 60 min with the speed 11 km/h on the end and I'm really enjoying it.
Thinking what I am able to do now and how was it before is a best feeling and best reward.

And last time I was in Philippines in June and I must say that it was surprise for me. Like always I was eating everything as much as I can without limiting myself. I was there 3 weeks. And after my come back home when I checked my weight there wasn't any difference.
I don't know why, but nice surprise. I don't have to understand it. :)
