The person who died of Coronavirus stayed in Dumaguete and Dauin, so a little fear factor has taken hold.

My wife's family have been horrified that returning Filipinos from Hubei province are being quarantined in New Clark City- just down the road from them in Capas!
    https://www.philstar.com/headlines/...patriated-hubei-be-quarantined-new-clark-city

There has been a lot of hysteria in Filipino internet circles, and this is the icing on the cake for them. Apparently (and I don't know if this is true) officials in Nueva Ecija refused to take these Filipinos whilst the mayor of Capas was ready to roll out the red carpet.

I am mostly concerned that next week we'll be having a chat with momma who will be coughing and holding her throat. If only she had enough money to go and see the doctor. I'm on to your game, momma. I didn't score 5/5 for Forward Thinking in my recent appraisal for nothing!

I hope nobody is due to travel to MNL with KLM any time soon. Their service which operates via Taiwan has gone completely pear-shaped.

Only Filipino nationals will be allowed to travel *to* MNL via Taiwan. Foreign nationals will not be allowed entry even if only in transit from Taiwan. But then on the return service, Filipinos will not be allowed to travel to Taiwan so only foreigners will be able to leave the Philippines!

Not sure if Taiwan traffic will have fallen off a cliff with the apocalypse approaching, so maybe KLM might skip the Taiwan flight until the apocalypse is over?

I am, in April, will need to check this out, it's far enough in the future that they might not feel the need to notify me yet.

By then I expect it to be a Pandemic and too late, I hope I am wrong and will be very happy when it turns out I am wrong, if I am right it won't matter there will be no reason to bar flights because it will already be impossible to contain inside anyone's borders.

I got the flight for a great price as well, mixed carriers but same group AF and KLM.

    MAN->CDG->TPE->MNL

    then

    MNL->TPE->AMS->MAN

:D that is the bright side Mike :D

I'll take my 50 to 1 chance with this thing even though I am getting on now, more worried about Nanay and exposing her to this thing given she is already not that well these days.

I must admit, when I first heard about this virus, I couldn't stop thinking about our kids, who are starting their lives.....

Indeed but this one does appear to be most deadly in the elderly, I'm not sure about the theories behind the reason for the death of the Doctor in Wuhan, suggestions of lots of virus particle exposure through contact with people infected overwhelming him, seems strange that after identifying and posting about the problem in Wuhan that it took that long for him to get ill, somewhat more than the assumed incubation period of 14 days (he noticed the problem in early December).

As an aside there had been a discussion amongst scientists as to where this thing came from the prevailing theory was leaning towards snakes rather than bats but the Singapore outbreak is now believed to be through trade in Pangolin they appear to be a symptom-less vector (they don't get sick but carry it).

The new view is that it jumped from bats to Pangolin and made its way to Singapore that way.

With other transmission vectors like this I can't see it being contained, there are likely ten times (or more) as many cases as are being reported, the thing I had two weeks ago fits the symptoms of this thing exactly, it won't be this virus but if it was no one would ever know.

I'm not too worried about the kids, they are strong enough and my niece who is 34 now lives in Shanghai, she's chosen to stay and thinks that everyone is overreacting.

Thank god they have finally named this thing.

    It is called Covid-19 now.

The word Coronavirus refers to an entire class of viruses Covid-19 is one of them, so start calling it Covid-19 and don't call it something that confuses it with every common annual virus strain that gives us a cold.

For reference the last flu pandemic was in 2009 and the UK health service was swamped and could barely cope.

    Covid-19 could be much worse.

I caught the middle of this programme tonight and went to look for the full programme, it came out a few years ago and is talking in detail about exactly this outbreak, prescient indeed, very interesting programme.

I don't remember seeing it before.

I still think they tried to weaponize the virus and it, somehow, got out of the lab.

A virus that does not necessarily kill people, but is able to economically affect nations.....
    Neat........

That's the common cold Dom or any seasonal flu virus, most of which are of the family Coronavirus, it makes no sense to attempt to create something that that hurts your own customers and who would attempt create it without already having a vaccine something which is also not particularly easy to achieve.

These news stories are slanted to infer that it is some kind of military project, but if you read it there is nothing that says 'Military', there is a line that says an institute might have leaked it, they leave it to the reader to draw the inference that this was deliberate.

These are research labs, there are research labs everywhere working on stuff like this for perfectly legitimate reasons, the Chinese have plenty of reasons to research this kind of stuff given their history with SARS.

In any laboratory anywhere doing research into any virus, it would be potentially possible for a virus to jump species, this thing will have evolved in nature just like all viruses have for billions of years, how and exactly where it jumped species is open to debate, but use Occam's Razor and don't make something more complicated than it has to be.

Here's something published last September, yes it talks about weaponizing disease (although more as an aside), but look at the countries who suffer most in such a projected outbreak.

Africa, India, the Philippines, China, Russia.

And it seems somewhat concerned with the economic cost maybe given that the site is an Indian website.

Have a read it seems pretty technically accurate to me.

My point was that it was a heartless analysis, more concerned with money than people's lives, but it was pretty accurate and was basically just a summary of what we are actually seeing right now a few months after the warning in this report.

However that will be just one of many such reports that have been drawn up in the last couple of decades, whether any real action to deal with this kind of problem would ever be taken or ever has been taken is another matter.

But the reality is that one day something like this will kill a very large part of the population, like it or not.

The Spanish wiped out the Maya, yes in part by intentional conflict, but the real killer was a typhoid like 'enteric fever' which killed 15 million 80% of their population in the space of 5 years and whatever it was it arrived with the Spanish.

Travel and international trade are the issue with any virus or disease these days, trade because it encourages people to travel and travel in general in the form of tourism.

One day something really bad is going to happen and there is absolutely nothing we can do about it.
