Not really into video but being honest 4k really is not that important nowadays more of a buzz word to sell cameras

I'm not a fan of Tony Northrup, but I agree with most of this and it's also probably the reason Canon have dragged their heels on 4k as they are a very pragmatic company.

Sony had serious overheating problems at the beginning of the 4K era as you are processing 4 times the data you have with HD, you need 4 times the processing power 4 times the storage, better glass and at the end of it all most people don't have a screen large enough for them to actually see the difference.

I certainly want Netflix and Amazon to continue recording in 4K it would be crazy not to you given the pro equipment they use you can see the difference on a good sized TV but for me I am only interested in stills for my own photography.

We have had a 49" Toshiba 4K TV for over a year, bought from the Tesco Direct sale for little over a couple of hundred quid (£95 of those were in the form of Tesco Clubcard vouchers...:))

Good, sharp picture, great colours and sound. can't complain at all.
The girl of the wife's barkada, attach their Karaoke stuff to it and they are quite happy, especially if they manage to get the Goodmans sound bar working at the same time.
This is when I sit at my pc, with netflix on, and a set of top of the range noise cancelling ear-phones...;););)

Ive been an LG fan for years. In a word..unreliable.

40 inch basic flat screen..cost £500+. Dead after 4 years
    Dvd hard drive recorder..packed up
Basic blue ray..unusable after a year
A better high spec blue ray..cant use it..needs to upgrade. In a cupboard somewhere
A better thinner basic 42 inch telly..had it 5 years..works fine..but screen has foggy patches on it. Will keep as a spare.

Now got an all singing dancing samsung blue ray player..bought dirt cheap "refurb" from tesco outlet for £50 over a year ago. But it was brand new still sealed older model. Now all i need is a blue ray disc to play on it.

So now waiting for my latest tv..this techwood 49 incher smart 4k should be here next week.

I vary rarely shoot video on the 7D also, Jim.
I find the phone is easier to shoot video on.
I'm like you - stills on the DSLR as the 7D is hard keeping focus as the kids never stay still for more than a few seconds. The EOS-R seems easier taking videos compared the 7D, looking at people using it in YouTube videos.

Who do you prefer to watch for photography-related videos on YT?

I don't watch mostly, but I take whatever Canon Rumors tends to link to if there are videos and sometime the guys that work on DPreview.

Northrup went through a phase of slagging Canon for reasons that to me at the time did not make a lot of sense, that was during the years of the sensor wars.

Our TV is a mere 43”, a Samsung Smart TV. Wall mounted. We have had it a few years now. It hasn’t let us down. But we want to go a bit bigger...

4K is head and shoulders above HD in viewing experience, but only if you have a screen large enough for the benefits to show. Honestly, on anything less than 60" I doubt you'd see the difference from HD. On my 65" Samsung UHD, 4K looks absolutely amazing. Some of the Netflix 4K is stunning. Would I shoot and edit in 4K for my home shot videos, probably not for the reasons mentioned in the video.

Viewing distance from the screen matters, I have a 43" set in the UK and can just make out a small improvement in quality with 4K at the distance I view.

And as for phones recoding at 4K it is pretty pointless as few of them have optics good enough to resolve it or processing algorithms good enough not to turn most video and photos to mush.

However the better 4K phones are kind of future proofing any vids you shoot just now for when truly huge screens become ubiquitous, proper cameras and lenses can resolve that much data but the price in storage and processing is too high to my mind at this time.

I do trust this chap and his site for very high quality written technical reviews of Canon and other manufacturer's equipment.

I bought a 50" TCL Android TV for the kids for Christmas at SM Appliances Sucat for 21,700 peso, it's great better than the Philipps 43" TV I have in the UK.

The PLDT internet in the house is only good enough for 1920x1080 on Netflix or less sometimes if 5 or six people are killing the internet with their phones and I explained to the kids before I bought it that the picture from the local cable company was going to look crap, which they finally accepted when the saw the difference between the cable and Netflix.

I have got PLDT home fibr 25 mbps and got a free upgrade to 30 Mbps unlimited data. TV won't play 4k youtube videos but will play netflix 4k.

I can tell the difference on my 50 inch TV between 4k and HD at a distance of 7 foot.

That'll be because the TV does not support the google VP9 codec, Netflix uses a different codec.

I have the same setup and have no trouble with 4K on YouTube.

Recent models from the last couple of years often support VP9 but not all of them, older models or those bought as end of line for a discount or just older ones won't always support VP9.
