The cheeky sods _ i bought a TV licence last year and for two months after they kept sending those stupid threatening letters. I choose to pay by DD, and WTF they charge you the first full year in 6 monthly instalments!! (so £25 for 6 months then £12 after). How kind of me to pay their wages 6 months in advance.

Twenty odd years since I had a television licence, I never watched it anyway, no idea what happened to my old TV.

I still have a decent Amiga stashed away with piles of floppies containing pirate software, all the old games, Lemmings and all that stuff. That was the only thing I used the TV for in the end, the Amiga has not been out of the box for over 20 years.

When I visit my Mother I find it difficult to understand why she turns the television on, it seems to be filled with biased propaganda these days.

I cancelled my payment cashplan which I had chosen to use during difficult times about 5 or 6 years ago, you end up paying far in advance and if you don't keep paying in advance they threaten you with legal action even though you have actually already paid in full for the next licence.

I had fully paid my licence for April 2018-April 2019 by Feb 2018 payments for the next one were supposed to start in Oct so I was being threatened with legal action in Nov 2018 for my April 2019-April 2020 licence, I called them and old them I wanted to go back to normal full payment in advance by direct debit and the threats stopped.

I will get a normal notification when renewal is due and can choose how I want to pay then.

I don't object to the licence fee although I do think we are getting less and less value for it.

My TV habits have totally changed since asawa arrived in the UK. I used to watch some soaps but don’t watch them anymore. I’d say I predominantly watch everthing streamed now (watching the England game as we speak via streaming). My preference these days are Amazon prime and YouTube. The only BBC stuff I watch now would be the odd documentaries, Attenborough or some such nature program.

    Edit: England smashed it!

Soaps have never been something I would enjoy but seem to be the mainstay of all the terrestrial channels now.

I mainly watch the beeb for the likes of Doctor Who although this season has not been quite up there with the older ones, you could call that a soap opera of a kind I suppose :)

I will watch BBC news and the likes of Newsnight and for many documentaries not just the science or nature ones and I use the iPlayer a lot for BBC comedy programmes the likes of Upstart Crow and the many science documentaries going back decades.

I find Amazon Prime limited but I do use it and have made purchases on there as well, Netflix is also limited in the sense that there is only a limited slice of their offering that I would ever watch, Sky gives me the rest and to be honest I could probably save a lot of money but cutting out most of them.

Obviously,it been years since we paid the Brussels broadcasting corp anything..
Our satellite provider does include BBC content but we will probably drop that service soon and just keep netflix for 500 Peso a month.

Yes I must concur regards the BBC news too, though generally I have seen the highlights of news from other sources by the time I get home on the likes of Twitter.

That sounds okay. We will be giving asawa’s papa an Amazon Echo as pasalubong as I believe they are operational there now.

Amazon still don't do delivery in the Philippines but I know you mean you will take one over, I hope it is now possible to sign up for an Amazon account in the Phils even though they won't deliver, the skype integration with the Amazon echo is a compelling reason to get one and take it over, I am assuming that once it is signed in you never have to sign in again.

Are you going over quite soon Paul it would be good to get feedback on how well the device works?

so how come its a criminal offence not to have a tv licence ? the money goes to the bbc--not the treasury. you need a tv licence even if you cant receive bbc tv.

As I understand it, you don't need a TV licence if you only ever use services such as Netflix to watch on-demand or catch-up programmes - except if you're watching BBC programmes on iPlayer. If you watch or record live TV on any device, you need to be covered by a TV Licence.

I haven’t actually checked the Pinas sunup myself Jim but that’s what Asawa informed me hence why she is taking the device. Again I didn’t realise the integration with Skype either but that makes sense for the Spot/Echo devices. I asked Alexa the other day what the best search engine was and she said Bing and I thought huh! I get it now :)

No the sign in should be permanent though on our first device about a month ago (almost a years use) I asked her to play song but she said we didn’t have an account so ended up having to reset. The 2nd device at this time had no problem.

But yeah if we get it up n running I’ll let you know the results. We are just weeks away.

Edit: difference between the Dot 2nd gen and 3rd gen is a much richer (more bass) and louder. It also seems to pick your voice up better, though I’m generally fighting to be heard above screaming kids on the 2nd gen one so maybe my tests aren’t that conclusive

I'm still a BBC fan. I rarely watch its news output but the other stuff is good, especially the drama and documentaries. I like BBC III and am a fan of radio 5. There is so little British content on Sky these days so I think that the old "terrestial channels" are worth keeping. I do worry whether the commerical model is an enduring solution these days though.

a bit off topic--but if you are talking about an alexa--i was given a 3rd gen echo dot for xmas. we only use it to play the radio--usually the breeze--but it selects the australian version !

i was also given a phillips hue LED bulb--which looks exactly the same as others i already have. i'm completely at a loss as to whether this should be operable by the alexa on its own--or whether i need a bridge or hub--or a plug in adapter. some say it doesnt need any of them. but mine dont work--so who knows. maybe i need to download something.

That is correct. My son, and later myself, signed their little 'disclaimer form', confirming that we only used our TV sets for gaming and other 'non-live broadcast' , etc stuff. I had always had a TV licence up to that point, but most of the channels were putting out such tripe, and repeats of repeats, that I decided. NO MORE (Plus, I was going to be moving to the Phils anyway).

It won't stop them sending their man round to try looking through your window,

but it does stop their threats, and in theory, you are totally 'legal' . :like:
