Foreign and local businesses have been frustrated with former President Benigno Aquino’s Public Private Partnership (PPP) projects, which often took a long time to kick off because of red tape.

The game changer is that President Rodrigo Duterte, who took office just over a year ago, has decided that all projects will be entirely funded by the government, which his economic managers say should simplify the process. The controversial leader says he plans a $180 billion “Build, Build, Build” infrastructure campaign in his six-year term.

Duterte has already approved the auction of 21 projects worth $16 billion, including the overhaul of Manila’s shabby airport and a railway line on Mindanao island in the south. Other projects include upgrading ports, roads, rail links and irrigation.

Its nice to see a politician that decides not to lumber his successors with the bill. If only he stopped murdering people he'd be ok but I guess no one is perfect

I was being flippant but he actually did admit to going on a raid and shooting someone dead.

If that's true and given the number of witnesses who would have been present, why was he not prosecuted? I'd be inclined to dismiss such an "admission" as bravado - lies to hide any insecurities.

Duterte wants Sangley Airport operational by November.

PRESIDENT Rodrigo R. Duterte on Monday evening ordered the Department of Transportation (DoTr) to immediately utilize the Danilo Atienza Air Base in Sangley Point, Cavite to help decongest the country’s main gateway, the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA).

But the DoTr said it expects the Sangley airport to start handling general aviation flights by December.

In a text message Tuesday, Transportation Undersecretary for Aviation Manuel Antonio L. Tamayo told BusinessWorld the DoTr is almost done with the redevelopment of Sangley for non-commercial air transport, and the transfer of such flights to Cavite is scheduled before the end of the year.

Wow... things are really moving forward now.

This could link up with the new high speed trains and the new tube system. :like:

I wasn't aware of the plans for a subway, very interesting although not terribly useful for us where we are, the LRT Cavite extension will be more use to us eventually.

While they are no doubt taking earthquake risk into account, that would worry me regards using a subway, it's bad enough with the existing soil liquefaction risks in Metro Manila in the event of a big earthquake.

Regards Sangley it looks like they are just moving all the light aircraft handling away from NAIA.

The approach to Sangley will be interesting (is already I guess) as it's north of the main NAIA runway but parallel, and aircraft are already flying quite low on the main approach by the time they pass Sangley, so I hope air traffic control is on its toes :)

I remember once returning from Boracay on an Asian Spirit flight and the plane had some problem it seemed to crab for most of the route, felt like the engines were not producing the same power on both sides, the pilot stayed really high right up to the last minute then he just dived straight down from about 20,000 feet circled right over the bay and came in on the runway nearest the old domestic terminal that was quite an experience, he was well above the normal approach to the main runway as he flew out over the bay and turned to approach the secondary runway from the north.

(4th UPDATE) 'We condemn in the strongest terms the cowardly action of the Chinese fishing vessel and its crew for abandoning the Filipino crew. This is not the expected action from a responsible and friendly people,' says Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana

MANILA, Philippines (4th UPDATE) – A Chinese vessel sank a Philippine vessel in a collision in the West Philippine Sea (South China Sea) and left the 22 Filipino fishermen on that boat "to the mercy of the elements," the Philippines' Department of National Defense (DND) announced on Wednesday, June 12.

“A collision between a Chinese and Filipino vessel (FB Gimver 1) was reported by Filipino fishermen near the Recto Bank in the West Philippine [Sea] on the evening of June 9, 2019.
