Hopefully someone local to you will respond with some suggestions John. There always seems to be one located in a city or largish town.

You'll usually find a lot of Filipino stuff in Chinese supermarkets.

There used to be one off Vicar Lane in Leeds.

Also one on George Hudson/Rougier St in York.

It is my guess that she will enjoy the Indian/Pakistani restaurants and takeaways in that area, like the Brits, John. It is the national dish now!

My Mrs does not like spicy or 'hot' foods. So, curry is a no-no. :(

this is very true. The prices of goods in Chinese shops in the UK vary massively.

what complicates things is that different lines can be very different prices in different shops. You say that a bottle of coconut vinegar is £1 in Shop A and £4 in Shop B, which I don't doubt - I can readily believe it.

But that doesn't mean that everything is cheaper in Shop A than Shop B or Shop C. A bottle of coconut vinegar may be £1 in Shop A and £4 in Shop B, but a bottle of sesame oil in Shop A might be £4 when it is only £2 in Shop B or Shop C. You have to very careful to price up each line and don't just assume that just because one shop is cheaper for one of or a few things, it is cheaper for everything.

IF you shop around carefully, you should be able to normally get Chinese sauces like the popular Lee Kum Kee type of sauces https://www.uk.lkk.com/
which are widely available in supermarkets in Philippines city malls, for about 30% less in the UK than what they cost in the Philippines although there are probably specialist Chinese shops in the Philippines that I don't know about that sell them for less than supermarkets do. I have shipped dozens of bottles and sachets of Asian sauces in balikbayan boxes over to the Philippines from the UK every year - they're cheaper.

For your sake, I hope she acquires a taste for curries - millions of British people did.
There are so many levels of spice and/or Chili - Chicken Korma is very mild.

actually it is a bit of a myth that Filipinos don't like curries or chili. People who know the Thai culinary conventions can make a kind of fake distinction between Thailand and the Philippines in this way. But they fail to realise is how distinctive and unusual, some would say gratuitous, the Thais are with the chili spice. They are nuts, basically.

gotta love the Thais but they are chili spicy lunatics. If they were Muslims and few are, they would be these chili terrorists that would want to bomb the Arctic ice block with 20 trillion tons of it to flood the world. These Thai radicals would be very dangerous people, if their fiery food didn't taste so good.

no other south east Asians are as much chili radicals as the Thais.

the others though do have chili a lot too but just not on that ridiculous, gratuitous, full-on Thai level.

Every time you go to have a Filipino barbecue there is chili you mix with soy sauce to have with the rice. Every caranderia sells chicken curry although it is a bit of mystery why they only ever sell chicken curry. They never sell beef curry, or duck curry like Chinese people do. One of the genuine mysteries, of Filipino cuisine, that. Chili sauce is available to put on your fries or rice, in every Mcdonalds and Jollibee in the Philippines. Ask for chili at a UK Mcdonalds and they'll just laugh at you.

the Philippines is kind of a mid-to-high ranking chili eating nation. They are not likely to win the league. But they do play in the first division.

I'll repeat... my Mrs does not like chili... or curry. (Neither did the last one). Thanks for the lecture though.

I like spicy food, once the sweat is running down my face I am in heaven!

Never been much into stinky fermented fish paste things though.
