The Philippines does not appear to be welcoming of the larger black girls, you can see why she is so upset, she must have become paranoid every time she set foot outside the hotel.

I didn't think Filipinos would have been so rude to her face but obviously its not the case.

    I'm a bit more thick-skinned than her.

In fact, some of my skin is about four inches thick in places

You have to have a tough skin to be a black skinned person from the province trying to get a job in a mall for example.. My niece prom di province applied for a job in Robinsons but was disqualified because she was too Black.. She had to hide in a darkened room and scrub her self with whitening soap for a month before she could reapply and get the job..

Many Filipino`s refer to Blacks as Niggers..Even on TV.. I dont think they mean anything by it but it can cause some pretty cringe worthy moments for sure!!

Fat kids here used to be used by the advertisement industry to promote wealth, happiness and healthiness for NIDO or MILO ads etc...

When the guys were putting up the Nipa on my roof, the Filipino`s below often referred to my workers as proper "Black monkey" workers, and real Filipino Tarsiers up there aloft..The workers aloft used too laugh and wave in agreement.

Now if those comments came directly from me,they may have been misunderstood and considered rude and disrespectful and then we would have had the Onion skin traits and bad foreigner comments!! They can dish it out but quite often cant take it in equal measure from us humourless outsiders.

Its a strange place for many westerners to comprehend thats for sure but once you get to know them, they aint so bad really! LoL.

I thought that Luis Suarez got a bit of a rough deal from the FA over his calling Patrice Evra 'Negrito'. It isn't used in a derogatory way among the Spanish-speaking. I went to the Spain vs England 'friendly' in 2004, and the monkey chants from the crowd were meant to be unfriendly. Calling somebody Negrito because they have black skin is considered no worse than calling somebody Rubio because they are blond. But it's the way things are in Britain. John Terry was reprimanded for calling Anton Ferdinand a f****** black c***. And the way I just wrote it is the way it was reported. And yet the 'offensive' word was the one which wasn't censored.

Generally speaking, people are able to discern if a comment is made in a derogatory way and don't need laws in order to sort things out. But I think over the past few years, Britain has become worse than Orwell ever predicted.

All very true; another way of putting it is that most people outside the urban middle classes are simple peasants.

My wife, described by one of her relatives to me as "too dark to attract a Filipino but good enough for a foreigner" (!) described me to a Filipina friend yesterday as "my white monkey" (this I think was in jest!).

An English friend of mine, female and blonde, hates the Philippines because she could not leave her hotel without being touched up and hit on.

As a tourist destination, the Philippines is incredibly under-developed. As such, the majority of tourists are other Asians from Korea and China. It is nothing like Thailand which attracts western tourists in massive numbers. Most of the western tourists are blokes or an average western family which is usually white.

My own gf will often stare open-eyed when she sees a white lady and especially if said white lady has a white baby/child with her. "So cute, diba?" I have no doubt that her reaction would be tripled if she saw a large black lady. Other than Amerasians, I'm actually struggling to remember when I've seen a black lady in the Philippines.

That said, even in many parts of Thailand I could imagine that a black woman would get a lot of curious stares. I saw a video the other day of a black woman in Tiananmen Square in Beijing where Chinese people were queuing up to take selfies with this exotic black visitor! Truly bizarre.

I've also been in some less visited provinces (notably Samar) where I was constantly followed by kids yelling "Hey Joe, gimme money." After a while, it got really really annoying. Every corner, there would be a different group of kids rolling out the same old lines. I eventually snapped and told the kids to leave me alone using several obscenities. In hindsight, I was quite lucky that a local didn't try and cause me bother for my hot tempered reaction.

In Boracay, I think a black lady would receive several curious stares but would be nothing like on the scale in a place like El Nido. If the Philippines ever managed to drag itself to the level of Bangkok, Pattaya or Bali, then with much more exposure it would become more 'black friendly.' However, on many levels it would also be a sad day if the place ever became overrun with tourists like Pattaya and Bali.

It is not always there on the surface but it does exist, but most of the time it is xenophobia and not overt racism.

There is in my mind a difference between racism and xenophobia, many people might describe my partner as racist if they met her and listened to her fears of dark skinned people and some things she might say about other races, however in reality she is xenophobic, she fears the differences in other cultures and the appearance of other people.

I was surprised when I realised she felt like that, and it was nearly 11 years ago that she first expressed these fears to me however she is not racist in the sense that she does not feel superior or seek to argue that she is superior to those she fears.

    I agree with OSS..
I dont think Filipinos really have any racist or otherwise offensive intent BUT..When the tables are turned on them in the slightest (intent or no intent) watch out!!!!!!!...Things can go down hill rather quickly and you may have to duck first..... and then run!

It's not really surprising, given the well documented cases of black american marines murdering people, it stokes the 'tradition'. My wife, before she started dating me, dated a black police officer.. one of her house-mates plain refused for him to come in the house, spitting on the floor and saying she'd rather be dead.. some folks are like that, most aren't, guess it's where you are brought up. I know that most Fils have a suspicion of blacks, but when working together this is easily crushed, especially within the institutionally racist NHS lol.. they tend to band together.. til the blacks hack off the Fils with being lazy! I do know for a fact, half-cast children of black and fil heritage are shunned.. this is universal, I think there's even a charity for these folks.. A bit sad, but then I find whitening adverts a bit sad, be honest you can be whiter than me, but nobody, NOBODY is going to mistake a Fil for western..

"...the well documented cases of black American Marines murdering people"... ??

I used to live in Subic, I still have both Filipino and European friends there, and I count ONE case where a Filipina prostitute was killed by a black US serviceman, after she stole from him, in the past thirty years.

If you know different, please post your figures.

Oh, and that's my wife and two of her friends, in the photo in Post 8 above.
